Looking for plastic glue that works on Arnold - Rapido plastic shell
Posted by Minigamer on Thursday, May 9, 2019 11:10 PM

I'm using the boiler from a very old Arnold 0-6-0 in a kit bash, but none of my plastic glues seem to have any effect on the plastic used in this model.  I've tried Ambroid Pro Weld, Plast-I-Weld by Flex-I-File, and Model Master Liquid Cement to no effect.  Super Glue does works but I'd really prefer something that fuses this plastic to polystyrene.  Does anyone have any suggestions of a plastic glue that would work?

Welcome From the sound of things you have the plastic cement side of things covered. Probably your only options would be CA (super glue) or 5 minute epoxy

I hadn't thought about the epoxy option in this case, but I think that's how I'll go. Thanks!

MEK sometimes works on plastic that resists other glues.

I'd like to give MEK a try but I'm not finding it available on Amazon or any of my usual sources by that name.  Is that the brand name?  Any suggestions on where I could find it?

MEK is Methyl Ethyl Ketone. It is not a brand name. I found it in a local hardware store. Do not buy MEK substitute. It is not as effective as a plastic cement.

Try to check out Loctite. They make some good glue/adhesive products.

While you may have already done it, another suggestion that you might try is DAP's Rapid Fuse. The particular kit you're looking for is the one with the plastic primer tube. I have used it to glue railroad wheels (Athearn-type) together for a detail on a wheel car that I'm bashing.
