Here's a question for the HO diesel kitbashers and super detailers. I have a new, old stock Athearn CNJ FM Trainmaster that I would like to upgrade, detail and weather using prototype photos from Gerard Bernet's excellent 1990 book, "Jersey Central Diesels."
These great big 2400 hp units had two large (44-48") radiator fans on each end of the long hood. The fans were mounted at perhaps a 30deg angle underneath very open grid wire grill so that you could really see the fan details in pictures. They appeared to have 10-12 "spokes" radiating out to support a housing rim.
Of course the Athearn body shell has a solid faux grill but I really love the prototype detail so my question to put out there is two-fold:
Mnay thanks,
Ed
Maybe see about getting an Atlas T-M body or see if they have those as separate parts. I have 2 of their FM units and they are open and beautifully detailed.

As Oldline suggested, try this page out, scroll down to the 3rd row of parts:

If not, maybe it will get you in the right direction.
Plano also has 48" fans and grills, although not specifically for a Train Master.

Cool. Those Atlas pieces are exactly what I was hoping for.
Thanks to you both!
A nice article, with photos and an S scale side drawing, appears in the January 1996 issue of Trains. There was an older issue from 1973 with photos and drawings but I can't find mine, assuming I had it.
Scale scenics makes mesh in different sizes, for example
