jhoff310 -- magnetism. I have seen videos on RFD-TV about O-scale layouts that use HO-scale trains running underneath blue-painted plexiglass with models of river boats on top. Large magnets are put into or on top of an HO boxcar, and a steel plate is on the bottom of the boat. As the train runs under the river, the magnet pulls the boat along. One layout even used real water that the boat floated in.

I saw a layout at a NMRA convention years ago where this guy (modeled HO) ruan a z scale train under his city streets, the Z scale train cars were some how fastened to the bottom of his HO scale vehicles. The vehicles would "drive" down the street.
IF you ever come to northern Ohio be sure to stop at train-o-rama between Port Clinton and Marblehead (www.trainorama.com). I was out there about 5 years ago and they had some very cool animation ( snow skiers, carnival, lights galore) try emailing the guy and see if he has any other cool ideas, as his layouts are ever changing.
