Of course now that I tried it to see if I could come up with the BAR thing I get "page not found". Absolutely wonderful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes the online all-time all inclusive index is extremely "fragile" it seems and sends out that message often.  But then sometimes it works.  I suspect Kalmbach spends no time or resources on it.  there have been privately published indexes over the years and I still rely on one for MR and Trains, and another for RMC and Railroad/Railfan.  But they only go to 1985.

The one on this website started as the private effort of a couple of guys, then MR acquired it, then they dropped it, then folks complained and they brought it back.

The annual indexes to MR that MR publishes each spring are useful but in my opinion, the methods of indexing because less useful and more haphazard after the late George Drury left Kalmbach years ago.

Good call Maxman, I always forget about the little resources thing.  Confused  I think the index through the Magazine drop down list only goes so far back.

Very top of this page on right in small print you'll see "resources".  Put your cursor there and drop down menu will appear.  Click on "magazine index".  When that opens you'll see a white search box.  Just below that you'll see advanced search.  You should be able to figure it out from there.

I'm thinking the only other way is subscribing to the Digital Archives.

You could also try Googling your subject and/or the magazine.  You might just get lucky, and get to the article, kind of through the "back door"

Several years ago I remember an article on modeling a BAR State of Maine car that I used to create a car; now I want to create a couuple more; How do I use the magazine indexes to find this article? I noticed that when I looked for the magazine indexes,  only more recent MR magazines show up; is there  an overal index that covers all of the articles in Model railroader that i can use?  Thanks
