My club layout has a few items that always seem to get attention.
There's the fight scene from the original Highlander movie with the Silvercup Bread sign.
There's a TARDIS that gets moved around the layout frequently.
One of our young members painted up a couple of vehicles as characters from the movie Cars.
Oh, and there is a surfing cow on the river.

RR_MelMy son Doug was quite the prankster so when I built his house for my layout I made it the Alfred Hickok Physco House. You have to know which window to look in but this is what’s inside.
I love it! I may have to try that, too, although since I'm basically a beginner, my house wouldn't be recognizable.

Nice work on adding something odd, funny, or just weird on the layout. I don't have anything yet, but I can see the draw of adding that. Too funny!
I had a fairly bulky tree in the foreground and it was inhabited by Keebler Elves. I got them from a friend who was in to gaming.

York1A boxcar from Middle Earth? Does anyone ever comment on it, or even recognize it?
.
That car has run in many public dislays, and no one ever notices.
I think since it looks so believable, the printing is the correct style, and the herald looks good, that people just assume it is legitimate.
I did not design those decals. That was someone else's crazy idea.

York1Have any of you put something completely silly on your layout?
I didn't do it, but many years ago, my son put a "hobo" in one of my gondolas. I left it there for quite some time, figuring it would discourage other would-be hitch-hikers, as the "hobo" was a largish gorilla.
"Strange or interesting things on your layout".
The strangest thing ever on my layout, and probably the strangest that this thread will garner, would have been me, laying on the upper level of the layout at the end of this aisle...
....painting the back (normally unseen) side of the rails, just in case, at some time in the future, I might want to take a picture with the camera sitting on the layout on the far side of the track, facing the aisle. The layout at the end of the aisle, upper and lower levels, is about 38" deep.
Even if I had set my camera on the tripod, and set the timer, there's no way that I could have got up there in time for a photo. Of course, if I had, it's unlikely you'd see it here.

Thanks for the ideas. You would have to really look hard to notice the rhino.
I also like the tripod.
A boxcar from Middle Earth? Does anyone ever comment on it, or even recognize it? That's funny!
I haven't been a fan of Futurama, but I didn't miss an episode of Lake Wobegone.
Mermaids, Wizard of Oz, and a train wreck -- thanks for all the great ideas. Hope my grandsons will appreciate some of the fun when they visit.
Hmmmm...
I have also included this Martian Tripod in quite a few pictures, but now I cannot seem to find one.
I need to take some more pictures.
MisterBeasley Mom's Robot Oil and Powdermilk Buiscuits, too.
I also had Mom's Robot Oil on a previous layout.
I need to include Powdermilk Biscuits on the next layout.
Cartoons and NPR. What could be better?
As long as we are getting nerdy... I have this freight car:
I've got a mermaid and the famous scene from Wizard of Oz with the main characters walking down the yellow brick road. Mr. Burns and Smithers are hidden in a building, and there's Mom's Robot Oil and Powdermilk Buiscuits, too.
It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.
I put funny little things in about 10% of the pictures I post in "Show Me Something", but very rarely does anyone seem to notice.
I don't put them right up front or in the center. You kind of need to look for them.
I haven't done anything unprototypical, but my friend does sometimes.
Our club layout, the Adirondack & Lake Champlain has a lot of silly stuff, mostly for kids.
Can't find the photos now, maybe later.

At the Kansas City Union Station layouts, my grandsons loved one of the layouts that had Superman, Batman, and other action figures hidden in the scenes. The boys loved looking for them. There were also other things like Godzilla hidden there.
I've thought of trying to do something like that on my small n scale layout. Since I am a science fiction fan, I thought I might try to put in an alien or something like that.
