Best NWSL Gearboxes for a Hornby Thomas and Percy (Help)
Posted by Safety Valve on Thursday, April 4, 2019 7:44 AM

Hi All, I have a Railway Series Hornby Thomas the Tank Engine in the works and  Work in Progress Railway Series Percy, that I am painting and modifiying that I got from a UK online retailer (That was part of two Train Sets) and had it shipped across the pond to the states last year, Hornby doesn't make these anymore as they announced sometime ago last year and they just recently stopped production, I have been wanting to get Thomas and Percy down to a much more realistic (Shunting / Switching) speed about 40 mph for Thomas and 30-20 mph for Percy, I would like to get a pair of Northwest Shortline Gearbox before the comany goes out of business, what kind of gear box would you guys reccomend, Thomas basically uses the same chassis as the R.52 3F from the 80s and 90s (although with an updated Motor) and Percy uses a Smoky Joe Chassis, I appriciate any information on this subject and Help... Wink

Hi,

Although I'm not familiar with those two particular locomotives and with NWSL parts probably going fast, I wonder if you have looked at what this UK drivetrain supplier has to offer?

http://www.highlevelkits.co.uk/pricespage.html

They mention specific Hornby drives, perhaps they can offer some help?

The drives at NWSL can be researched by input shaft and axle shaft diameters and ratio using their planning guide. I've installed them on some brass engines but don't recall the specific boxes I ordered.

 This bulletin may help:

Good Luck, Ed
