dknelson If I were King I'd eliminate the layout and layout building as well as prototype subsections of this forum, and have two subsections: general and electronic/DCC. I think everyone can figure out that distinction. But what is layout versus general versus prototype is almost an ecclesiastical matter. Dave Nelson

Dave,
I'd agree with you that sometimes the line between general and layout can be somewhat blurry. However, if the main gist of a query or discussion is about a RR-related "prototype", I think it belongs in a separate forum for those who are more interested in and knowledgeable about that type of discussion. On occasion I have moved non-RR-related threads to that forum because it discussed architecture, engineering, or something 1:1 that was important for a scratch-building project.

A reasonable suggestion, Crandell. One problem with that is if the OP doesn't have either their email notification or their PM set up so that you can communicate with them. That's more the exception to the rule but it does play a factor.

maxman tstage So, you all aren't the only ones frustrated with the current forum software. Are you saying that the forum software, which can't seem to do a bunch of desireable things, is somehow smart enough to determine that a particular post doesn't belong here and moves it to there? "I don't think so, Tim". I think that a carbon based entity is involved.

Would it be possible to say add a new thread titled say "xyz" thread moved to "other" forum? And then lock the new thread. That way folks would know where "xyz" went.

Heartland Division CB&Q In any case, participants in the thread were not notified of the change in location. The convesation stopped.
Garry,
Thats supposed the happen because there's a check box for that feature on the Move tab. Unfortunately, the latest version of the forum software (which is what...7-8 years old now?) doesn't seem to send out notifications anymore.
Same goes for deleted posts. A moderator used to be able to send an explanation to a OP why their post or thread was being deleted. Not anymore. And splitting a thread into two different threads hasn't worked for years.
So, you all aren't the only ones frustrated with the current forum software.
The Bachmann forums has this issue but the administrators "always" mention it in a message so "everyone sees it.
A fair amount of new people have no idea about looking for the appropriate forum so it is not uncommon.
Also, they have spell check.

If you ever fall over in public, pick yourself up and say “sorry it’s been a while since I inhabited a body.” And just walk away.
Garry and all,
I feel your pain. There's never a good time to move a thread on the forum because it's inevitable that somemone will be in the process of responding to it during the move.
My suggestion is to always highlight your reply then copy (Ctrl+C) your post BEFORE hitting the "Submit your reply" button. If the thread gets moved, or the server goes down (and you get the "Sorry, something happened" message), you can always re-paste (Ctrl+V) your response in a new reply and try again. I lost a lengthy reply just a few days because of the latter and had to recollect and retype the response all over again.
BigDaddy Me too and the post was in limbo for a couple hours. Another thread reappeared with missing posts. Heartland Division CB&Q There must be a better way. People could start the thread in the appropriate sub forum. That said, the only forum that was clearly the wrong place for the Eat-Rite thread was the Electrical forum. There are other forums with a dozen or more sub forums. Nothing works 100%, somebody is going to make a mistake, do those forums move posts?

Henry ..... Thanks for commenting.
In my case, the general forum seemed to me to be the most appropriate forum . However, I can see how the prototype information section would also be correct. ..

I recently had a thread moved at the exact time I was adding another comment to it.
The way this is being done is annoying and discourteous in my opinion .
There must be a better way .
Last two or three years I have noticed that many post questions in the General Discussion (Trains.com) forum that never seem to get answered. Not sure they were ever moved or the OP figured out the proper forum. I spent some time looking through the list. I mentioned a few times, wrong forum but tired of that after a while. Not my job.
Bachmann forums, sometimes some cannot figure out the proper forum. Many times an administrator with move the message but make mention it was moved to prevent confusion. A nice idea.
It was moved to Prototype information. It's there.
