I got an email from scaletrains about their new dash nines, so I had to check them out. Boy do they look nice. They fixed the orange paint and it looks much better. They also added new lighting features And to top it all of, the sound units will come with loksound 5.0. That whole product line of decoders will be released in February. Sounds like its going to be a good summer for BNSF GE fans in HO scale...
I'm beginning to realize that Windows 10 and sound decoders have a lot in common. There are so many things you have to change in order to get them to work the way you want.
I'm looking forward to the Loksound V5.0.
I've always like the flexibility that Loksound enables in uploading and modifying sounds (and even uploading customized recorded sounds). Plus, the motor control, imho, is second to none.

Excited depends on what your poison is. If you are 1990s+ fan, then you may be excited.

Agreed. I do hope they'll eventually offer something for the 50s or older.
And I think Loksound and TCS have equally great motor-control, with Lenz Silver & Gold series a very close 2nd.

And another thing I like about TCS, although I have not purchased anything yet, is the "packages" they offer, when you look at the various installs on their web site.
Decoder, sound and speaker. Seems nice and simple to me.
And to answer the OP's question, yea, I like it. I model from the 90's on. I'm watching.

Yeah, riogrande5761, seeing as though this thread is directed at those modeling the 90's onward, I would think there would be no "depends". Unless you were responding to the part of the question that involved the new decoder series...
Since I model post 1990, I'll check out what they have. IIRC, the wide cab sd40-2 was nice.

Douglas,
Here's what I was able to find this morning:

I guess more will be written after the release in February...

That's a pretty impressive upgrade already. 10 simultaneous sound, more sound slots, 4x the memory space for the sounds, 16 bit 32KHz sampling, higher frequency drive with even better BEMF.
Now, where are the ScaleTrains transition era locos? Rivet Counter RS-3, please.

Yes you have, and I worked hard to resist earlier today.
ScaleTrains, I'm not holding my breath for anything I want. Here it is 1954, and we don't do DCC.
I was excited a few years back when Bachnann released their line of 1950's 50' piggyback flat cars w/35' vans, which I doubt would be on the OP's radar. I bought a big stack of those...........

Well, it wasn;t that long ago when 3 or 4 were it. So you have prime mover, air compressor, bell, horn..wait, soemthign has to stop so the horn sound can be played. OK, 4 sounds, now the horn can go at the same time as the other. But we're going down hill in dynamic braking...hmm, somthign has to stop playing to hear the sound of the dynamic brakes. Oh and that GE air spitter.. flange squeal, brake squeal.. that's why you need multiple simultaneous sounds. Add another - an E unit, with dual prime movers.
Of if you prefer steam - exhaust chuff, blow off valves, air compressor, stoker or shoveling fireman, dynamo for the lights, safety valve popoff, whistle, bell... rod clank. That's 9 right there, a decoder than can only play 8 simultaneous sounds wouldn;t be able to play all those at the same time. And we haven't even gotten in to brake squeal or flange squeal.
More on topic answers-honey to the bear. No offense taken. I just didn't want the thread to take a decidely off topic slant about these things being useless so soon...
I've got more sounds than I need already, but the higher frequency drive with better BEMF is what I was hoping for.
Keep the modern stuff coming.....
It sells out way too fast.
