Ho Scale Road Striping
Posted by Tophias on Friday, December 28, 2018 12:45 PM

Started making roads on my layout and now it’s time to add striping. I found white 3M auto pinstriping in 1/16” size for shoulder stripes but can’t find a source for yellow dual stripe 1/16”. Can anyone point me to a vendor? Much thnx.

Tamiya makes yellow tape in various widths. I got mine from Amazon.

I use gel pens, which are available in many colors.  With a straightedge and a French curve, I get good road markings. thanks

I got my yellow and white 1/16” single and double stripe tape at a local automotive paint distributor.  Only the packaging had the manufacturers name so I don’t know the brand but I think its 3M.

You can get it from Amazon too.

There are some very narrow width tapes on ebay, maybe beauty supply shops, too? It is intended for "nail art" for doing pin striping on finger nails. I bought assortments very reasonably. Yellow might be a tough color to find, there are many silver, gold and blacks but if you look you might find yellow.

6" in HO is only .0685

I made my stripes by painting the stripe color (white in my case, yellow pre-dates my era) on the road surface FIRST, then mask your stripes, apply dark gray or concrete color then peel up the masking. Makes for a much neater looking stripe.

Just my method that worked for me.

Good Luck, Ed

Mel, thanks very much for that link. That’s exactly what I was looking for (especially the 12’ length).  I had seen an old post about this when I was researching alternatives but I just couldn’t find a vendor (Amazon or other).  Probably my search entry was off base. Anyway, Much appreciated!

Line-O-Tape has all kinds of colors and sizes of pin striping tape. HobbyInc.com is a distibutor of the tape or you can go to Line-O-Tape's website.

Being old is when you didn't loose it, it's that you just can't remember where you put it.

So Mel (and of course anyone else), I have my 1/16” and double 1/16“ tape now and took a look at Them. Trying it on a small practice piece I was able to separate the top protective layer from double stripe tape (made by 1060 Graphics) but I am unable to get the protective layer off the single 1/16” tape (3M  Scotchcal).  My two part question is 1) is it necessary to remove the top layer, especially on the 1/16” size? 2)If so, any tips on how to separate it?  Thanks again.

It’s been several years but I don’t remember having a problem removing it.
