I bought second hand on a model railroad expo 2 Athearn blue box AMD 103's AMTRACK N.E. corridor ; one powered( Athearn 3654) and one dummy( Athearn 3683).
The dummy has plastic wheels.
Can I replace the plastic wheels with metal wheels?
or is it better to
make from the dummy also a powered locomotive with spare parts from Athearn?
Yes, you can change them to metal wheels by swapping the dummy wheels with Athearn geared wheelsets. Just pop the bottom cover off, drop the old ones out, then drop the new ones in!

Thank you for the information.
I went to the web site of Athearn and it seems that there are no parts availible any more for the Blue Box Athearn AMD103.
You should be able to find what You need here:
http://www.nwsl.com/nwsl-online-catalog.html
Your loco may be listed. Helpful to know what size Yours are,My guess would be 40''/42'' with blunt end axle's.......call or send them an e-mail for help.
Take Care!
Frank
The axles are a general part, and Athearn does keep them available: http://www.athearn.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=ATHG19254
Since they fit so many models, it's easier for Athearn to not put all of that info into the title. It could be really long otherwise!
