Kato N scale 4-8-4 GS-4
Posted by PED on Friday, October 12, 2018 12:14 PM

I am planning to buy an N scale Kato 4-8-4 GS-4 to add to my diesel fleet for an excursion train. Would be my only steam loco.  Looking for some info before I make a purchse.

1) I have not yet invested in sound for my diesel fleet but I do plan to make that move later. I want to install sound in the GS-4 as soon as I get it. My concern with sound is that a lot of what I have heard so far does not sound natural. Often very tinny sound or not correct for a specific loco. I know the speaker is a big player here so I want to do it right the first time. I should note that I saw one speaker installation that cut away a big piece of the weight in the tender. That is not good for this particular loco since the tender really needs this weight to track properly.  Any recommendations on a specific sound decoder and speaker for the Kato GS-4?

2) This loco comes in several paint schemes. The version I want is the BNSF excursion version. It is all black but has several small BNSF logo's on the side that I would want to remove without damage to the paint under so that the loco would not have any markings left other than the loco number. I could paint over them if needed but I would prefer to remove them. Any suggestion on best way to remove these?
