Starting to build roads for the layout. Where can you get white and yellow stripes?
I've seen some you can buy but the thicknesses vary. I just need them for HO. Do those Woodland Scenic markers work?
Ah, yes: STRIPING. The other spelling brings up much different concepts.
I recently saw a very nice example using chart tape. For a long while, road striping has had thickness. And so does the tape.
It looked great.

LOL It didn't look right to me, asked someone sitting next to me and they thought stripping also
I've seen a video, that I think was MRVP, where they masked and painted them with an airbrush. I know they have used a pen, by Woodland Scenics, looks like a yellow magic marker with a thin tip.

I believe the chart tape I saw was applied to painted "plaster". I don't know if the guy had problems with it, except he did say it didn't much like to curve.
I don't have a very good photo of the road, this will have to do —

I used Durham's Rock Putty for the highway surface, primed it, then airbrushed a white band where I planned to have stripes.
I applied tape. I do not recall now if I cut my own tape on a piece of glass (I believe this is what I did because I wanted to use "light stick" painter's tape) or did I use masking tape already cut. In either case, it was a simple matter of placing a single strip where I wanted it, then paint a dark gray, almost black, coating over it.
Automotive paint supply houses have many types of narrow masking tape. Ebay and Amazon, too. There's also "nail-art" tape. I have some of that which is only .030 inches wide, if you need a narrow stripe.
Last step, of course, was to carefully peel away the tape. In my era the "double-yellow" hadn't been adopted yet.
A double line can be done the same way, but with a little more care in placing the tape to keep the lines parallel.
Good Luck, Ed
Ah, the Achilles' Heel of my modeling talents. I have never been able to make a striped road look correct.
.
My last two layouts featured no paved roads! That solved the problem for me.
I will need a solution for the next layout. The plan is for several paved roads, and one is a highway section!
Plan around your defficiencies!
