Advice for a Newcomer.
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, December 28, 2004 6:13 AM
I'm an Australian but enjoy this recently discovered (for me anyway) site. I don't currently have a set up but Iam going to get in to Model Railways, probably HO scale. Any general advice on how to start up, base for layout etc. would be very much appreciated.

Thanks.

There is a lot of good advice to be found here, but you might also try the 'Introduciton to Model Railroading' pages of the NMRA at: http://www.nmra.org/beginner/ for a lot of basic information. :-)

in a nutshell...first plan your layout...what you want on it..industries, sidings, spurs, ect....draw it on paper over and over again until you get a design that will satisfy you...purchase as many publications as you can on benchwork, wiring, and scenery techniques and study them...now to the layout...build the benchwork first...lay the track, do all the wiring, then do the scenery...chuck

The amount of accessories, locos, rolling stock, options will be overwhelming.
For a sneak preview try and take a peek at the 2005 Walthers reference(catalog)
Over 1,000 pages and thats not all conclusive. One of the biggest players, Athearn
is no longer listed.

Happy railroading. You bot a round trip pass so come on back.

...and read, read, and read some more. Subscribe to MRR magazine and buy a few introduction to model railroads books. And hang out here often!

And, welcome!
