Some of the Shay tips ought to help, the drive is mostly the same. Also, int he early 80's (80 or 81), there was an article in MR about kitbaching one into one fo the slightly alrger 100 ton models, which onvolved splicing two units together. With the extra length the author added two large Athearn flywheels and a new motor. Skip the extra flywheels, and the step about lengthening one of the drive shafts (one truck retained the same relationship to the large bull gear as the stock boxcab, the other was further away), and you could follow the same steps for repowering and regearing. I believe the universals and such came from Nortwest Shortline, although I recall the gears in the gearbox up top came from a slot car.
If I ever get ambitious I want to repower mine and rebuild it to match one of the two Reading engines. A guy sold a customized model like this on ebay a year or so ago, and I saved rthe pictures to work from.

mdc boxcab diesel best way to repower
Posted by trolleyboy on Monday, December 27, 2004 9:44 PM
Hello everyone I have been working at one of mdc's generic box cab diesel models, I've converted the body to an early box cab electric for the traction portion of my layout. The motor runs but I've not had any luck getting it to actually move the model it binds it grinds but stubbernly refuses to move. [bang head]Since I know it's not supposed to be the best runner I'm wondering if any of you out there have repowered one(I don't want to lose the trucks however as they match my L&PS prototype exactly)Will any of the hints in the rebiulding the MRC shay book be of any help? thankx Rob
