Weekend Photo Fun
AUGUST 10 - 12, 2018
All Are Welcome!
Here is an opportunity to showcase any recent project or layout progress or to simply post a photo or two of your favorite railroad-related subject.
Please feel free to post any model railroad related photos here — past or present. This is a place to share photos of your layout, equipment or current project.
I have finally dusted off the roundhouse project that I began back in January! For some reason I was lacking the motivation to get the lighting installed... not any more
RH_lights5 by Edmund, on Flickr
I still have a few more runs to install plus the back wall gooseneck outside lights.
RH_lights2 by Edmund, on Flickr
In total there will be 78 LEDs installed.

It is tedious work but well worth the effort.

It has been warm and sunny here in NE Ohio so I have spent my evenings in the cool basement to avoid the sweltering heat. Good call I would say
On to more of the stuff that makes WPF Great!
Cheers — Ed.
Well, I shouldn't been a minute sooner. Guess the MR crew will have to adjust. Nice roundhouse project, Ed.
Hope everyone had a great week and got a lot done. Myself, it was mostly non-RR things,, but there's been a decided shift indoors and more towards really great RR stuff. In fact, this goes beyond pics and into some interesting video.

My friend Thomas asked if I would take video of him operating on the 1:1 at the Monticello Railway Museum. Cab ride for really cheap and all I need to do is run the camera? Heck yeah! This first clip is mostly instructional and then the run starts near the end. Thomas is operating a MILW Road NW-2, 1649, as seen here.
After some instruction by the crew on the last passenger run of the day, we had the raod to ourselves. In this second, lengthier video you get to see some, but not all of the collection as we ride through the steamy Central Illinois countryside.

Our lead engineer turned out to be a fellow who used to work at the now long-gone but findly remembered Hammer's Hobbies in Decatur, IL. They were my go-to shop back when I had a job, but exited sometime around 2000. Much missed, they stocked klots of current run models, gave a nice discount, and would faithfully follow through on your track orders (What will we do without Shinohara, too?) and even order brass for you at the same discount. Ah, the good old days, but he was happy to hear I'd done some good stuff with those several bags full of trackwork I'd bought.
A few more items in the collection, well worth a visit by any modeler, even if you decide to take a pass on operating.

Oops! Hopefully Steven will get on it after he has his coffee
A little thread-blending magic, please...
Ed
Hey Ed,
I moved all the content here and pointed in this direction. They should just out a lock on it.
The roundhouse is coming along nicely.
Thanks Ed and Mike for starting us out this weekend.
Ed, the roundhouse lighting is coming along fine, a little bright to me.
Mike, cab rides are a great thing, also neat if you can run it yourself, which I got to do a couple of times.
Since I am not doing much modeling right now I took a picture of my new Athearn FP7's that I got on sale serving as emergency power for the Broadway Limited.
Taken at the Strongsville Model Railroad Club layout.
Thanks for looking!

Rule 1: This is my railroad.
Rule 2: I make the rules.
Rule 3: Illuminating discussion of prototype history, equipment and operating practices is always welcome, but in the event of visitor-perceived anacronisms, detail descrepancies or operating errors, consult RULE 1!
Love this thread. It's been a while since I posted here but I follow every week!
Ed, that roundhouse is really impressive! Great videos and pics Mike-- I especially like the old Soo Line caboose. Rick, nice motive power (and the setting is great, too.)
Sometime in the last few months I put up an 11-foot shelf to serve as a semi-permanent space for my RSL (rural switching layout)-- the layout itself, unfolded, spans eight feet and there's room for cassette staging on one end.
Finally having made a home for it, maybe the next thing on the docket is working on suitable lighting and backdrops. Scenery moves along slowly and steadily.
Thanks for looking and really looking forward to seeing more this weekend!
Phil
Ed .... Thanks for starting Phoyo Fun ..... Your lights in the roundhouse are fabulous.
Mike L .... I was at Monticello Ry Museum several years ago. It is certainly worth visiting. Thanks for sharing your photos.
Rick ... I like your FP7's
Phil .... Your 2-8-0 is a very nice looking locomotive.
Here are some shots of Union Station.

Great work on the roundhouse,Ed,and just the inspiration I need to get going on mine - if only I had the LED's. I've got some coming from China, they tell me the package should arrive sometime between Aug. 15th and the End of Time.
Mike: Fun stuff! Thanks for the video and pic's,and nice of you to do that for your friend.
Rick: Good looking shot of the FP7,looking forward to more great rolling stock builds(and the history that goes with them).
Phil: Nice scenery, and a classy looking engine,I like the canvas at the rear of the cab.
Garry: Your passenger train/station scene looks terrific.
I've done a bit more scenery/ballast work while I'm waiting on LED's:
Also working on a small boiler shed(right side of roundhouse):
Nice to finally have somewhere to park these:
Looking forward to everyone's contributions - Have a good weekend!
Mike
This week I completed another factory building for Boothbay Railway Village. It is another in the series that hides the main line tracks on the left side of the layout. Getchel Polar Ice makes ice in blocks and cubes and is also a cold storage warehouse.
Bob Holland. one of our volunteers, finshed a DC-3 that flies over the roundhouse. It has flashing navigation lights
George In Midcoast Maine, 'bout halfway up the Rockland branch
I have been working on a way to hide a hole in the backdriop. it turns out a road bridge makes the perfect structure to hide the hole. I made a pattern of the location where the bridge was going before I went on vacation. I had some free time while on vacation and built the majority of the bridge from 0.040" styrene and a few other plastruct styrene shapes.
The railings were done at home on the CNC router. I wanted to have the curved railing and tried a couple different things before i got them right. The round balls on top are sewing pin heads. I painted the whole structure concrete gray and MOW green for the metal beams.
Here is the bridge in place with abutments in place. I still need to paint them concrete gray. I ran out of tan sand to start putting scenery down.
I haven't laid down the asphault on the bridge yet.
I think the bridge covers the hole well. I still have to optimize it and get some thing inside the hole fixed up.

dti406Ed, the roundhouse lighting is coming along fine, a little bright to me.
I think the automatic exposure on the camera make the lights look brighter in the photos, Rick. I agree, though, all the roundhouses I've ever been in were dark, grimy affairs. The Nickel Plate, though, seems to have had some of the brightest-lit ones, it seems. Looking at photos in the John B. Corns book NKP Publicity Photos, Vol. 1 shows several brightly lit interiors with fluorescent lighting, no less.
Great contributions, everyone!
Thank You! Ed
RR_MelDo the props turn or have sound on your DC-3?
The props do not turn. If it had been me, I would have cut some acetate or clear styrene disks for the props. Bob installed a speaker under a shelf near the plane with an engine sound effect.
The "Lighthouse Railway" is a pending layout project of mine. It will be a British OO scale narrow gauge micro layout in two boxes, showing an Edwardian era seaside tramway connecting a lighthouse on the beach with a small port town.
So far, I have a small tramway loco, an open coach, a closed coach and an open freight car. Not to forget a flag stop with a shelter. All of it scratchbuilt by my Japanese friend Junichi!
The detail is simply awesome!
With the outside temperatures having dropped back into my comfort zone of 70F, I was able to do some gardening on my tinplate layout.
Happy times!

Ed, Thanks for the WPF start-up and the shots of your lighted roundhouse, hooray for LEDs.
Renegade1c, Your highway overpass, (and Mike's in last week's WPF) are inspirational modeling and fine examples of a good way to hide the ol' tracks coming out of the wall. Also a great stage on which to display various traffic scenes, I can't help but envision a bicycle race with accompanying team cars and motos.
Seems that the "Bandit" and "Frog" might look at home aboard this glitzy Pontiac.
Thanks to all the contributors, have a good weekend, regards, Peter
Thank you all for your contributions.
Ulrich, your OO equipment is so cool... Makes me want to cheat and add some European locos on my Canadian layout!
Simon
Wow, I really like all the contributions so far this week.
.
Ed: Thanks for starting us out. The lighting in the roundhouse is truly an elegent execution. That project is going to be great.
Mike: It sure looks like you had a fantastic time. I love the wooden Soo Line caboose.
Rick: Nice to see you around still. That PENNSYLVANIA FP7 with the Train Phone is one slick locmotive set.
Phil: The long shot down your trackwork looks very good.
Garry: Union Station sure seems like a busy place.
Other Mike: Wow, two roundhouse updates in a week. Great work on yours as well.
George: The Cold Storage Facility is a neat building.
Renegade: That slick angled bridge is doing a great job of hiding the pass through hole. It is well executed and it look to be effective.
Mel: There is no replacement for genuine Kolinsky Sable. Those Soviet Block weasels sure know how to grow great paintbrush bristles. There was a time for about six months they were unavailable.
Bear: Thanks for the two funny captions.
Ulrich: That Japanese locomotive looks like a gem.
Peter: I hope Bandit can keep his hat on.
All I have done is build another Athearn Blue Box kit. This one is the NMRA heritage car #13 for Gorden Odegard's PLATTEVILLE & CALAMINE layout.
See everyone next week. Thank you for making WPF the best.

Love the pictures gents and especially Chicago Union Station. Brings back memories when I rode a USAFA special into Dearborn Station back in '68. We had a fine time being hosted by the city in more peaceful times.
My contribution is this Athearn GP38-2 painted up in Mt Hood RR colors. The line runs outa Hood River, OR, up the east slope of the Cascades. Tis a great ride if your ever out this way and the food on the dinner train was top notch.
The unit is painted using Pollyscale and Trucolor paints with decals from Bill Brillinger. The scheme is very straight forward, but very time consuming.
Ed - The roundhouse appears to be coming along nicely.
Mike L - 1649 looks to be freshly shopped. A nice looking loco..
Rick - Good looking FP7s. Pennsy is one of my favorite roads.
Phil - Up so high that layout must be difficult to operate.
Garry - Great station photos. A true passenger train fan.
Mike - Nothing like a full roundhouse.
Garry - I like the DC3.
Renegade - Nice little bridge & a clever disguise.
Mel - your patience and skill amaze me.
Bear - Your comments add a touch of levity to the thread. I appreciate them.
Ulrich - A cool little train and interesting small layout.
Peter - A TransAm with a screaming chicken!
Kevin - Nothing wrong with a BB kit. Good job.
Terry - The speeder train looks good.
Don - A very colorful loco.
Nothing new this week. Kind of vegging out. From the BRVRR archives:
Pennsy E-8 # 5713 leads a short passenger train Eastbound, past Grafton Tower on the BRVRR layout.
Keep the photos and ideas coming guys. Thanks to you WPF is always the best thread of the week.
Remember its your railroad

BRVRRKevin - Nothing wrong with a BB kit. Good job.
I also managed to accomplish something else this weekend... I cleaned off the model assembly bench!
Thank You to all the good folks who have contributed the great pictures that make the Weekend Photo Fun thread a great success!
Thanks, too, to all the kind lads that commented on my on-going roundhouse project. Tonight I finished soldering the feeders to all the radial rails so I believe I'll be able to set 'er in place this week.
Great Stuff, everyone!
Cheers, Ed
