dh28473I'll try the alcohol first
Do not use anything more than 70% alcohol or you will take paint off.
Some people claim to be able to remove the lettering with a chisel blade. My hands aren't that steady.
I tired the pencil eraser and it took off the paint on the high spots, like the door hinges and left the paint in the grooves. This was on a Bowser engine. Also tried the microsol and scotch tape and that did nothing.
There are several old threads on removing decals. Alcohol on a micro brush is another technique. It is also prone to taking off surrounding paint.
I have not used solvaset.

If it's a factory-decorated engine, it's probably pad-printing rather than decal lettering. I find Solvaset and a rubber pencil eraser works well, just work slowly and keep adding a little Solvaset every so often; eventually the lettering will start to smear and come off.
I used that method to change a factory Wabash FM diesel to a New York Central engine:

I use 600 grit sandpaper and wet sand the old printing off.
Can it be done or will it look messy?I have a proto 2000 engine that i would like to change from grand trunk to cn what is the best way to remove the name and logo without removing the paint?
