*Trying to recall how much the old Walthers Oscar and Piker set ran for back in the 1970s, so I could use the inflation calculator...

don't know what the piker was in 1970 but the oscar was $4.25. the calculator i used said today it would cost 27.34.

The 1979 edition of Walthers catalog ($5.00) listed the Piker at $8.45 and the Oscar at $9.95.  I knew I kept those catalogs around for some reason.

Sounds like you are talking about Eggliners.
Eggliner
I always thought them to be a bit silly, especially at US$200+ each*, but I supposed if you can combine the ends of 2 round tail observation cars to make a custom one it would be more reasonable in terms of expense.

Enjoyed browsing the New Braunfels Railroad Museum website and seeing lots of folks wearing big smiles, especially the youngsters.  Keep up the good work and good luck with the "Bumblebee."

Hey :

I gotta send this .I just got a hot idea from my G scale operator at the museum . he has a little self propelled car made from the two ends of this type of car . It's in " G " Scale and marked like a ladybug . Well , yours truly got bit by the cuteness of the " Bug "

Sooo , I am in the process of doing it in H.O. for the same reason .The cuteness factor and the kids will get a bizz out of it . I am going to paint mine like a " BumbleBee ". I will get the Station Mgr . To get a picture of it on the site for you folks to enjoy .Coming Soon ,The " Electric Bumblebee "
