Evening All!

Hobby Front:
Latest Project: Another take on NP SD45 3617. (I bombed out on the Spectrum unit.) Still in process.

It is an Athearn SD45 bought via eBay. (Found completely by accident. Looking for freight cars and ended up with an engine!) I can't take credit for most of the paint. Someone had painted the unit in NP colors already. (The 4 window side panels and the proper NP headlight were also already installed.) I had to touch up a couple of areas where the prior painting was a little sloppy. I also had to fix some sloppy CA gluing. (Easily cleaned with some Glue Buster. Bottle can just be seen in the far end of the photos.) The only decals that I didn't have to do are the monad on the cab sides and the logo on the nose. Also trimmed the handrails a little bit to get them a little closer to correct. The plow and the airhorn both will be reused from the Spectrum unit and will be attached later. The antenna is on order as I couldn't find the ones I had ordered previously.

(Also ordered some styrene strip for the wheel car and some horns for the 1200. I snapped the replacemtn horn off again and I can't find those either.)

 Eveing Diners Sigh

Flo, the gang and I will have a Beer and give Rick and Steven what they want.

Work Sucked and not looking forward to Wednesday. Seems my customer that bought a King Set from Saturday heard what she want to hear and not what I said. Told her Tuesday we will call after 6:00 PM and before 8:00 PM and give you a 3 hour time frame we can deliver your mattress. What she heard was we will deliver it after 4:00 PM and before 8:00 PM. Go figuer?

Brother Can you spare a DB 150? Laugh Tried to do a reset of the DB 150 and got some strange reading on the DT 400. (I posted about it in the DCC section) I all so found out that Digitrax no longer makes DB 150's. I just hope they can still fix them! I was some what shocked by the current command stations prices! I paid $329.00 for the SEB and power supply guessing 7 years ago. Now a command station by it self is $300.00? Seen a system by Digitrax called EVO for $360.00 that I don't have to spare.

Seems strange not hearing the Mighty CB&Q F7's dragging freight.

 Later, Ken

Good Morning!

This place looks deserted lately! I hope it is not my "Tales of Austia" keeping folks out of this place.

Time to "git goin´ ". This time, we are heading south and take a train ride along the Südbahn (Southern Railway).

The Southern Railway is a railway in Austria that runs from Vienna to Graz and the border with Slovenia at Spielfeld via Semmering and Bruck an der Mur. It was originally built by the Austrian Southern Railway company and ran to Ljubljana and Trieste, the main seaport of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy; a main obstacle in its construction was getting over the Semmering Pass over the Northern Limestone Alps. The twin-track, electrified section that runs through the current territory of Austria is owned and operated by Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) and is one of the major lines in the country.

Construction of this unique line commenced in 1841 and reached Trieste in 1857. It was the first railroad across mountain terrain. At the time, when the construction started, there was no engine available which was sufficiently powerfull for the mountain climb.

We reach the city of Graz in about two and a half hours.

Graz  is the capital of Styria and the second-largest city in Austria after Vienna. On 1 January 2018, it had a population of 325,021 (of which 289,440 had principal residence status). In 2015, the population of the Graz larger urban zone who had principal residence status stood at 633,168.Graz has a long tradition as seat of universities: its six universities have almost 60,000 students. Its historic centre is one of the best-preserved city centres in Central Europe.

For centuries, Graz (Slovene: Gradec) was more important to Slovenes, both politically and culturally, than the capital of Slovenia, Ljubljana, and it remains influential to this day.

In 1999, Graz was added to the UNESCO list of World Cultural Heritage Sites, and the site was extended in 2010 with Eggenberg Palace (German: Schloss Eggenberg). Graz was sole Cultural Capital of Europe for 2003 and got the title of a City of Culinary Delights in 2008.

Have a great day!

Happy times!

Morning all.

my dna history is a combination of German Hungarian slovak English and who knows what else, so I appreciate seeing stuff from my ancestors home. ITs fascinsting.

welol, potential lead for a real job, I just havent had the energy or time to go talk to the owner about it. Hopefully I can tomorrow.

work on my trestle is going well, except I'm almost out of cement.  Trip to the hobby store I guess is in order soon.

My club picked up a new member, so we're at about 13-14 members now. not a bad number, and since he's my age, this will make setup of our modulars a lot quicker and easier. we only take our portable layout on the road once a year, since we are An older age club and it takes  toll on our older members. Although, maybe if we get an influx of young peopl, anything is possible.

i saw a sport I follow might be for sale-NASCAR. All I am going to say on that is, Brian France messed up the sport so badly, maybe someone new needs to run it. Someone who actually listens to the Fans.

Supposed to be a nice day here, and I work.... sigh.

have a great day all

I stumbled on UP's twitter account and they are having a live announcement Thursday night about the Big Boy they are restoring.   They are machining bolts with a CNC machine and converting it to an oil burner.

Good morning .

FRRY .... Nice looking SD45, but the photo made it look shorter than it is .

Ulrich .... Nice scenery in the viseos. I like the European stone arch viaducts.

Henry .... Interesting news from UP about the Big Boy.

Jimmy .... Good to hear your club has a new member .... Best wishes regarding job prospects.

Ken .... Sounds like your Digitrax stuff is giving you problems. ... If you have a defective decoder of any brand including Digitrax , you can send it with $10 to NCE, and they will send you a new NCE decoder. I have done that.

Afternoon folks!

Jimmy_Braum
my dna history is a combination of German Hungarian slovak English and who knows what else

I used to tell my eighth grade classes when we would start the unit on "World Music" that most all of us are a mix of many different nationalities.  Then I would tell them I am mostly English and German with some Irish, Scotch and a little Bourbon as well.  Today I would have been fired on the spot for that but my classes would roar.....

Just a quick break from getting several things done today.  Did my 3 miles over at the fieldhouse.  They are setting it up for Hobart and William Smith Colleges Graduation this Saturday.  Ran into an old friend who is one of the major Sound Guys in the country (Greg Bennett who owns Moondog Sound).  He is doing the sound for graduation.  He is also doing audio and video installations now, so I got his card to give to the church as we move forward on streaming the services soon.  We are making a checklist of where the noise problem may be coming from in the hgearing loop that was put in yesterday.  I think we have a ground loop prob;lem somewhere in the circuitrey.  One of our members works for the local electric company and deals with this sort of stuff so we will get him involved...

Also trying to get all the information I need to create the Program for the MLK Scholarship Dinner a week from today.  I could use about two more weeks to get everything done!  Best get back to work and get something accomplished before I have to Take Manet to the Vet for a check-up.

Ulrich, I haven't had time to see any of the videos, but will after I get caught up with the deadlines here!

Later!

Not much going on. Went to the club last night, still having problems with track cleaning, I have been given permission to try "gleaming" on a extra piece of flex track to see if it helps.

Measure twice and cut once and I still managed to cut an oversize circle for my turntable.

Plan B Use Ken Patterson's technique of using a router.  He does it indoors, holding a shop vac hose next to the router.  I did it outside.  His shop vac is better than mine.  For those of you old enough to remember Larry Flynt, I created a whole new meaning to think pink.  I can't believe he does this indoors.  I had to call my wife on my cell phone to vacuum me off.

Fortunately I was wearing a respirator.  Unfortunately I discovered in the shower that during my work in the woods, a tick took up residence in a place I cannot mention in the diner.  He came out still kicking, as opposed to leaving his head behind, so he must not have been there too long.  We live in Lyme and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever land, but he chance of being infected is related to how long the tick is holding on.

Is it ground hog mating season?  Yesterday on the news, a cop had to draw down on a ground hog that charged him across a 4 lane highway.  Today a woman was attacked by a ground hog and they are claiming it is mating season.  I hunted ground hogs a few times and if they saw me a 100 yards away, they did not wait around to see what happened next.  The foxes have had there pups, the eagles eggs have hatched and I doubt that groundhogs are just getting around to being amorous.

Good night diners,

Here's the low down on what I've been up to, the mower gremlin has returned, with a vengeance, what's wrong this time? Well the fellas up at the community college did a fine job welding the mounts back on, but now the deck keeps jumping off the deck lift bar, the fix? For now I wrapped some wire around it, later this week I'm going to get some bolts and make a stop for the bar that won't allow it to come loose.

Today is day two of the Coon Wars (Star Wars: Clone Wars pun intended) we are 1-1 with the coons, last night I set my trap (it's a Havahart Humane trap) and baited it with Vienna Sausage (as in Spam) well the little trickster managed to escape!? With all the sausage!!?? But tonight I reset it with tuna as bait and I rigged up a better anti escape system, the feller fell for it! Only two or three more left in the pack, what's the disposition of the entrapped coon? He'll be dumped out in the woods down a dirt road, still alive of course.

My brother has possibly met the Phantom of Phried Decoders... his Gator stopped running the other day for no apparent reason.

Mike from the club sold me a 6 buck pizza box for holding rolling stock. He's going to help me get some of my cars club compatible, including my Pennsylvania Fleet of Modernism cars that go with the T-1.

Ohh and today is the Piano Man's Birthday!

To you classical music lovers if that tune sounds familiar that's because it's L.V. Beethovens Sonata Pathetique Second Movement, W.M. "Billy" Joel had on the back of the Innocent Man album and the This Night single crediting L.V. Beethoven as one of the songwriters.

It's now 11 PM Pacifica Watch Time.Laugh

Today is day two of the Coon Wars

We had an episode with a raccoon when we we about to have our bathroom renovated a couple of years ago. The day the reno was to start Dianne was in the bathroom at about 6:30 am getting ready to go to work when all of a sudden there was this loud banging and crashing noise coming from the ceiling right over her head. She woke me up (not calmly I might add) and I went outside to see what was up. Sure enough the soffit was knocked out of place. Great! I have workers coming in an hour or so. The first thing they have to do is tear down part of the ceiling over the bathtub. This was not our lucky day!

However, our luck changed almost immediately. I picked up the phone book to find a pest removal company and the very first number I phoned was answered after the first ring. This was before 7:00 in the morning! I asked the gentleman later why he was up so early. He said he had a 10 week old baby. That explains it!

He was at the house by 8:00 am and was about to install the one-way trap doors in the soffit so the raccoon could get out but not back in again. While he was on the roof taking measurements he banged on the soffit and made a lot of noise. Mrs. Raccoon did not like that and came out right away. Fantastic! No need for the trap doors and no newborn babies in the attic (she was huge - obviously pregnant). The gentleman then proceeded to repair the soffit and add raccoon proof screening to the vulnerable areas including the roof vents. That was all done before 9:00 am. The bathroom guys arrived as he was packing up his equipment.

So, we went from raccoon crisis to problem solved in just over two hours, and the bathroom guys didn't come face to face with a mother raccoon who was protecting her babies. The only sort of nasty bit was the bill. The guy charged me $350.00/hr. I was so happy to have had the problem solved so quickly that I didn't argue. Things could have been a lot worse.

When I was selling roofing I saw an incredible amount of raccoon damage. One house was missing almost all of the soffits. Apparently the home owners had tried to prevent a raccoon from going back into the attic several times, and the raccoon decided to show them who was in charge by knocking down huge sections of the soffit so it could come and go as it pleased.

I had another customer where a raccoon dug straight through the roof, plywood and all, to get inside. The home owner heard some noises in the attic so she decided to open up the attic access hatch to see what was up. She came face to face with a snarling racoon. It scared the life out of her.

Racoons can be dangerous even after they have gone. Raccoon poop often carries a parasite named Baylisascaris which can be extremely dangerous to humans and other animals like your dog. Infection is rare, but if it happens it can cause blindness, organ failure or brain damage. In fact, raccoon poop is considered a bio-hazard, so if you ever have to clean up after them, wear disposable gloves and a face mask!

May the raccoons give your house a pass!

Day three of the Coon Wars...

We trapped the little bugger around 10:30 last night, he had an eventful night, rolled the cage 5 times, this morning we hauled him 7.8 miles down through town and across the two creeks, down a road out into the woods, as soon as I opened the cage the little feller took off running into the woods.

2-3 more coons and 1-2 possums are going to go for the same ride.

I doubt they'll be returning...

Coon wars?

Well, raccoons are not native to Germany, but some wise guy let two couples of them loose in 1934 and now they are spreading all over western Europe. While there are hardly any in my neck of the woods, they have turned into a real pest down south.

We do have quite some issues with these little fellows:

(Source: Gilowyn - Eigenes Werk, CC BY-SA 3.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=5803006)

They do considerable damage to cars, climbing underneath the hood, feasting in wires and hoses.

Happy times!

Ferrets hmm, to think that here in the US of A pet stores sell those critters as pets.

One of the "Urban" Legends in my area (I heard about it from the Boy Scout troop) is a racoon named Houdini that lives at the Boy Scout Camp Avondale whom supposedly can escape any trap, someone once setup a shotgun with a leg of chicken tied to a string which was tied to the trigger, next morning the gun had been fired, the chicken was gone, but no coon.Laugh

Another candidate for the Darwin awards.

Good morning from the West Coast. A pleasant day with highs creeping towards 28c this weekend, glad the pool is up and running.

Ken, the pool is not a blowup, I just say that as we started with blowups when the kids were tiny and it is an ongoing joke as we went to larger pools as the kids grew. I think it is 16' x 32' IIRC. This may be the last year for it as the kids are too busy to spend much time in it, we'll see.

Been non-stop around here lately, had the big fair at the kid's school that was not as busy as it has been in the past but should still bring in six figures to help fund things.

The kid finished up his movie shoot and came home. Had a great time and learned a lot about the difference between a high budget movie and this one. His other movie experiences were "Wonder", "ThePredator" and "Deadpool2", all big money stuff. This was a low budget run of the mill Christmas flick.

A couple of things happened on set that were different for him. He was a bad guy putting money into a money counting machine while his gangster boss watched. The fake money had not arrived so they ran to the bank and got real money. The machine started eating the money and shredding it on each take. They lost about $150.00 overall but did get the scene. At the end of the first week, the producer and director pulled the kid aside and gave him $650.00 cash and said it was because he performed so well with no mistakes he had saved them a lot of time, thus money. The second week they gave him $400.00 cash for the same reason, so that was a little extra he wasn't counting on. He made good money overall for just having a lot of fun he said.

Someone on the movie put a bigtime talent agent on to him and though they have been talking, the kid said to them he is going back to school in the fall and it probably would not be worth their time and effort. Extra work should pay the bills without complicating things. He was offered another out of town shoot but needs to study for the two exams he deferred and needs some rest as well, as his days were 15 to 19 hours long on this last shoot.

Need to catch up on the Austria videos as I have not stepped into the forum for days. Rick Steves did the first one Ulrich posted. My Sister has taken many of his tours and thinks they are the best, they are just small groups and they have made lifelong friends from them.

Ed, I always liked that shot of the "big event", I thought it was well done in the TV show "Hell On Wheels".

My son and I are involved with Disabled sports and there is a big high caliber national sledge hockey tournament this weekend here. I am in rough shape as all the other volunteer stuff is catching up with me, however, I will do what I can if I can even get there. Painkillers can only do so much. My kid is the arena announcer for the tourney, I may just help out with that. We have a lot of wounded warriors that play as well as others. For what they have done serving the country, I should be able to tough it out through a little pain to help out.

Our house has been a pit stop for a lot of kids heading home from various Universities across this fair land and around the world. They are heading home up north and have to have layovers in Vancouver to catch a flight home. Nice to see some of these kids. One girl stands 5'2" and drives a water truck all summer at a mine. She makes about $40,000.00 and that gives her a good standard of living for a University kid, including two weeks in Hawaii at Christmas. With these kid's the future is in good hands. We a getting another one today I have not met, makes life interesting.

Well, time to go hop on the Deere and attack the grass as it is overdue as a result of all the other things going on. The kid is so exhausted from all the hours he has put in, he is sleeping and it is well deserved.

All the best to all.

A trapped raccoon really has an attitude.  They will try to chew through the metal cage.  A friend of mine had a farmette on the Eastern shore of MD he would use on weekends.  One day he saw a pair of racoons on the roof.  He got his shotgun out and one rolled off the roof dead the other disappeared.   When he went back, the following week, he discovered he killed both of them, the second, falling into the chimney.   It was August, you can imagine the rest of the story.

By all means you should visit Patterson, maybe you will be on the show.  Unless it is rehearsed, the Coombs kid is a savant, remember every episode number and what was on the episode.

 Eveing Diners

Flo, Fried Chicken and Greek Sald for everone! Give the gang and I a Beer and Rick and Steven what they want.

Train Front Big Smile Went to K-10 Model Trains and used one of there DT 400 to reset my DB 150. Went Perfect! They happen to have a used DB 150 for $89.95 and to be on the safe side I bought it. I had not moved or uninstalled the DB 150 for 7 years. I was freaking out when it would not power the track! Tried the one I bought, same thing? Confused Confused Sad Called K-10 and spoke with Dave that helped me today. Asked me "did you hit the track power button?" Whistling Like I said, it has been 7 years now.

Henery I have tought about it a lot. To be honest, I don't feel like I would have anything to add to his Pod Cast besides being a body. Unless it wants to do a spot on What Not To Do!

Gary Because of your posting about the Erie Bulits I have my Santa Fe A unit dragging freight. I for got what a great running engine it is. May be time to install a sound decoder in it!

Trains are running great and I am happy!

 Later Ken

Evening all, hope everyone is well...well better than I am today.

Hello random anxiety attack in addition to (undiagnosed) depression, I didn't leave the house today.  I can't afford a therapist right now-one of the MANY reasons I'm job hunting- so I cope by isolating myself from people.  I need to spend my next work day off going to talk to business owners directly about unemployment...no luck applying online.

The diet is going well.  People are saying they notice it in my face.  I know the old joke about model railroaders never turning down a meal but, I'm trying to drop my weight down to about 150...I'm 5'7" so thats about right for my height and build type.

Also people are having difficulty guessing my age now...I'm 26 and I've been mistaken for 18-22 a lot recently...I'm not complaining though, it's a good thing.

Train front: not much, waiting on my refund to come in so I can get a locomotive I need, but I got this done today-'

So I made the best of a bad situation apparently.  It's amazing how a coat of paint will improve the realism.  I just need to get through tomorrow, and hopefully I'll have a nice long weekend to myself.

I've never had to face a racoon, but I've dealt with an opossum before.  It was sitting on my porch, eating the cat food.  I made some noise from inside and shined a flashlight at it, it ran off.

I hope everyone has a good day tomorrow/.

These are the opinions of an under 35 , from the east end of, and modeling, the same section of the Wheeling and Lake Erie railway.  As well as a freelanced road (Austinville and Dynamite City railroad).

Evening folks,

I want a pizza please. I have been pizza hungry lately.

The wife is slowly getting over the crud. I think she had it worse than I did as she ended up with a sinus infection. Blah.

I went to go add feeder wires to the museum o scale layout last night and I forgot my drill and my soldering iron. I took everything else.  I did get the telegraph key and sounder working. So my trip was only partly a bust.

Not much going on , work and more work. I may get certified this summer as a locomotive engineer, more to come.
