It was Prof. Mustard with a, oh wait! Your subject line had me going there...
I get the hesitation of removing a shell body from a loco. I had similar fears with an Athearn. You probably can find a youtube video or calling Atlas. Waiting a day (it's a holiday today) is much easier than risking damaging the loco.
Oh, how I long for the good old days, when a Forum admin could click to delete an off-topic reply, and delete ALL its equally off-topic replies with it, in one stroke...
Seriously, people. Keep it on topic.

tstage Riley, You shouldn't need to remove the handrails. IIRC, all you need to remove are the front and rear coupler gear boxes. The entire shell should then pull right off. Tom

Tom
you are correct
Great,I went to the TCS site that you recomended and it showed very clearly that all you need to do is take off the coupler mounts. It doesn't get any easier than that !Thank you all for your help, this is always a great place for assistance when we need help, even when need to remove a body ! Riley
First, you find a alligator filled swamp, or a lake that no one knows how deep it goes, and send the body swimming, if the bottomless lake is the preferred route, cement shoes, or diving weights, are recommended.
In my area, the preferred locale would be known as Tamarak swamp....
Oh.... A locomotive body....
If its metal, it should sink on its own... But you could just give it to me.
Oh... a model locomotive body...
Lets get specific here...
On HO scale Atlas units, I find it helpful to use toothpicks, as they will prevent the tabs from locking back into place.
Coupler boxes need removed, and, on some units, the ends of the hand rails need disconnected from the sill.
Go slow, and methodically think it through, and it will come right off, no issues.
Now, about removing the other body......

Gee.....I was going to suggest calling a coroner....or even the police....

Oh well.....good luck with Your body!

I knew the area it was for, but, I couldn't resist seeing if anyone commented about cement shoes yet. Seriously though, it depends on the brand of the locomotive.

These are the opinions of an under 35 , from the east end of, and modeling, the same section of the Wheeling and Lake Erie railway. As well as a freelanced road (Austinville and Dynamite City railroad).
I share your pain.
I had an incredible time opening up the Atlas late model B boats. With help from forum folks, it happened.

Time...It marches on...without ever turning around to see if anyone is even keeping in step.
You can search the Atlas web site for the info that you need.

It looks like there are clips that hold the shell to the frame. Check it out.
