That photographer of the Feb. cover, Steve Crise, seems to infuse all of his photographs with a golden glow that is perfect for suggesting not just California sunshine but also a vague sense of a bygone era, as if the "film" itself had a different tonal range.

Is it just my aging eyes or do the photos in Model Railroader seem to be reproduced a bit more subdued in color and focus lately?   To my eyes that change seemed to start with the much ballyhooed "1000th issue" last year.  Perhaps a function of less glossy, more satin texture paper?

Taking that beautiful cover shot for example, to me it looks more crisp in focus and the colors more vibrant on the glossy cover than the very same shot does in the interior of the magazine.  I  notice this same sensation with latest Model Railroad Planning where admittedly the photo quality is less important.  Evidence that it is perhaps not my aging eyes is I do not notice this in Trains magazine.

But,I'm partial to the January's cover and I notice the March issue cover looks promising..

Despite the lack of a blue-logoed title, "Model Railroader" looked pretty good to me. I didn't even notice it until it was pointed out.

Jim, I could not agree more. I am a passenger train guy, and that layout and that cover photo are awesome. There are some additional photos of the layout including an even better version of the cover photo. Let me dig up the link and post it.

Just bought the February 2018 of MR as a coffee table piece.  Its the most visually stunning cover I can recall. Great job!
