We can call it "Throttle Your Local IT Programmer by the Neck day!"

I feel your frustration, Dave. But like so many "technological advances" today, even in DCC, SO much of it has to be backward-compatible that it must make for some real headaches for those IT types.

I remember the 8088 days when if you wanted to access memory in your computer above the 64 kb limit you had to use a DOS command to reach the high memory limit of — one whole megabyte!

Wow, that's a lot of code just to link a photo.

Right click the photo, then select "inspect" from the bottom of the drop-down menu. Talk about a lot of code Indifferent

I hope you get things squared away, Ed

Again, IF you are posting a photo from Flickr, using BBCode, THIS is the link that will be copy > pasted IN THE TEXT BODY OF YOUR REPLY not in the insert/edit image icon box.

I got the text to appear in my post but I deleted it because it wasn't the actual photo. I never tried to submit the post because I figured the post was messed up.

I think we should have another international holiday. We can call it "Throttle Your Local IT Programmer by the Neck day!". I don't understand why the IT people don't recognize that there are still lots of us dinosaurs out there. I guess we are just too small a portion of the market to bother catering to.

Whine, whine, whine!! Fat lot of good that's going to do me!

Yeah, I didn't want to have to quit using Photobucket. I already had thousands of photos at Flickr so it was how I transitioned to using them for "third-party hosting"

I CAN get rid of all that text before the "http" and ".img" and then copy THAT into the forums insert image box. The main reason I don't use that method is, as I mentioned in an earlier reply, Flickr wants to have the link-back shown with the photo as part of their EULA.

Like you, Randy, I do have a blog-site at Wordpress but it is a "work-in-progress" and I don't have very many photos uploaded there.

Cheers! Ed

The problem fromt he other link was exactly what I said - the URL you posted in your message did NOT end in .jpg, it had other stuff added - that will NEVER work.

At least this is what works for me. I don't mind having the "Flickr by Edmund" moniker at the bottom of each of my photos. Sure beats all the Popups from Photobucket

The image above was from a November 15, 2017 discussion about...

— how to post photos Whistling

In the case of your trackplan photo, Dave, the copied link would look like this:

 Flickr by Edmund, on Flickr

— and would show up only as text in the body of your reply but when you then post your reply to the Forum the link would become active and the photo would appear.

Hope that helps,

Good Luck, Ed

Sorry Randy, I didn't pay close enough attention to your first post about where the 'jpg' had to be. I'm going to go back to the the other hosting sites and see if I can figure out what I was doing wrong.

Thanks for your help,

Dave

The problem fromt he other link was exactly what I said - the URL you posted in your message did NOT end in .jpg, it had other stuff added - that will NEVER work. You must be using the wrong 'source' on Flickr. Notice the different data in each of the possible imgur links - only the correct one works, if you used any other box to copy from, it would also fail.

One pretty much standard rule - the URL shown in your browser on an image hosting site is never the URL used to link your image to another forum. The required URL will be to the side or under your image in a box marked for the purpose.

It's different when you use a generic web site like I do - then the URL int he browser IS the link to the photo.

Hi Henry:

I just managed to post a trial picture using your first method. I guess I'm using imgur from now on.

Thanks for your help.

It's been working for me with Edge, for the last few posts of my track plan. Granted, those are coming from my personal web site and not a picture host, but it really should be the same - whatever URL the provider lists as the way to post your photos on other web sites is what you use, it should end in JPG or GIF or BMP, PNG should work too. If the URL ends in ANYTHING but the file extension, it will never work.

Fire Fox won't do screen shots, as far as I'm able to figure out.

On my laptop, I hit the windows button and print screen.  The screen dims for a split second.  Then I hit control V and Voila...nuthin??  If you go to Paint, which is a standard Windows program, you can do the control V and save it as a jpg then upload it somewhere else like Imgur

Nice shot from Coal City, Henry.  I like those dash8-40bw's.  I have a couple waiting for decoders.

Imgur has several ways that your picture might appear to you

If it is this view, there are several choices that work in this forum.
The first, you use the insert picture icon. Note that the link ends in .jpg.  That's different than the dropbox link which had dl=0 following the jpg

The other two choices are BB code and linked BB code.  DO NOT use the insert picture icon for either of these.  Enter them as you would any copied text

If you are in album view, the choice on the right are not there.  Click on the arrow next to COPY and a new menu will appear, that gives you 4 choices.  I alway click the BB code

Dave

I build up my posts in Word, I just found it easier to post that way.

Since the Photo Bucket disaster I’ve been posting pictures from my blog.  I use a page not listed on my Blog so that the public doesn’t normally see the stored pictures.

I’m running Firefox 56.0.2 because I don’t like the newer versions.  When I right click on a picture on my Blog one of the selections is “Copy Image Location”, I then paste the link to my Word document.  I do a copy of the Word document then past it to the Forum reply window.

After the paste I double click on each photo link and do a copy and paste to the add picture icon.

This is a copied link using “Copy Image Location”

The picture below is the copied link and pasted to the Forum add picture icon.

This might sound like a lot of trouble but it makes it much easier for me.

The older I get the more behinder I get so anything that makes it easier I go with it.

Ed,

I saw your test in the testing forum and tried the same method using Flickr on your photo.  It didn't work because Flickr has an automatic zoom feature when the photo is clicked on in Flickr and it doesn't give you the Copy Image Location option. Sad  The option from the Dropbox page that Dave posted did work though.

I'm still here. I'm trying to digest the last few minute's posts.

Edit: I've been up all night trying to solve this issue and I am too tired to go any further tonight. I'll try again tomorrow.

Thanks guys.

That's why I like to right click the actual photo itself, left-click Copy Image Location, then paste that into the Insert/Edit image Source text box.  It always works for me - no matter what photo-hosting site I'm copying it from.

I'll give that a shot over at the "Forum Testing Grounds" Tom!

Thanks for the heads-up.

If I do that, Ed, it just pastes the link with no photo...unless you were talking to Dave.

Yeah, Tom. I was trying to catch Dave while he was still here. If he pastes the Flickr link into the MR "Insert/edit image" text box the link won't work.

hon30critter
Yes, I have copied the BB Code into the 'Edit Image' box several times and the results are still the same.

So, that might be his dilemma...

The way I've been linking to Flickr I'm keeping the ID code attached to the photo because, as far as I can see, it is Flickr's policy:

https://www.flickr.com/help/guidelines

Link back to Flickr when you post your Flickr content elsewhere.Flickr makes it possible to post content hosted on Flickr to other web sites. Pages on other web sites that display content hosted on flickr.com must provide a link from each photo or video back to its page on Flickr. This provides a way to get more information about the content and the photographer.

Just playing safe...

Cheers! Ed

Don't use the "Insert/Edit image" icon.

Simply hit Crtl + V to paste the text of the link into your reply.

Go ahead... try it.

I'll be waiting.

The one thing I like about the method I use is that I don't get the extra Flickr info (i.e. IMG_6762_fix by Edmund, on Flickr) displayed at the bottom of the photo - like what's shown in Ed's earlier posts.

One last thing... are you sure you are using the "BB Code" link when you copy from Flickr? Might sound elementary but sometimes it defaults back to email or embed when you want BB Code.

Hi Ed,

Yes, I have copied the BB Code into the 'Edit Image' box several times and the results are still the same. If this continues I'm going to start using words that Steven Otte won't like!

Thanks again for your help.

Maybe?

Good Luck again. I have had headaches with many of the stupid Windows updates lately.

With one of them I lost all the text in the drop down menus in my Adobe Photoshop and Premier Elements programs. It took me hours to patch up.

Microsoft pleaded innocent. "Could not have been anything WE did" but it was proven that it WAS! Angry

Go ahead Ed, rub all the salt you want! The process worked for you but it is not working for me. Microsoft has just done a bunch of updates on my computer. I'm thinking I'm going to do a restart to a previous date and see what happens then.

Thanks, Dave.  Here is what I get if I:

  1. Right-click photo and choose "Copy Image Location"
  2. Click on Insert/Edit image icon above text box
  3. Copy and paste URL in Source text box
  4. Click OK

Works for me?...Yes, it does.  FYI: I'm using Windows 10 Home (Version 1709) with Firefox 58.0.

OK, here is the URL:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/4ll44gcephr16zl/Section%209A.jpg?dl=0

If I left click on it the link icon in the header highlights but nothing else happens. If I right click on it I get a drop box which allows me to open the link in a new tab or a new window.

Dave

Edit: OK, now I am really messed up! I just left clicked the above link and I immediately got the image. That wasn't happening before.

Dave,

Suggestion: Paste the photo's URL in your post so that everyone can see it and try it for themselves.  That will tell you if it's a problem with your computer or the URL.
