California Railroad Museum, Sacramento

Will be visiting the Sacramento area soon.  Any new displays?  Did the NMRA open a model rr section in the museum?

Any other prototype or model RR exhibits in the area?

As far as I know, the NMRA layout is still in the planning stage.  The NMRA finally inked a deal with the state last year.  As far as displays, the lineup in the roundhouse changes fairly regularly.  The U.P. yard in Roseville is a pretty busy place.  Further north, the Western Pacific Museum in Portola is worth the drive along with a stop at Keddie Wye but the museum is closed until early April.  Local clubs in Sacramento include Sacramento Model Railroad Historical Society and the Roseville Model Railroad Club.  If you venture a little further west towards the Bay Area, there are plenty of clubs to visit there also.

The Napa club may close and Golden Gate is now owned by the museum, a lot of members have left.

Railroad Hobbies is a really nice train specific hobby shop located in nearby Roseville.  Quaint location, well stocked, friendly and knowledgable staff & restroom.  The shop is very near the famous/infamous Roseville yard.  In 1973 a freight train loaded with 250lb. bombs exploded in the yard.

Have a good trip and regards,  Peter

I was down at the Rail Museum just after Christmas.  There was a mockup of one of the railcars for the California high speed rail, and a high speed rail simulator near the rail theatre.  Most of the displays were the same as when I visited the museum last summer.  Go by the waterfront to see two of the Santa Fe locos that were cosmetically restored/repainted.

If you got the time head out of downtown sacramento and head east toward Roseville and up "the Hill".  Depending on the weather (and snowfall) head up to Colfax, or further east toward Alta and beyond.  If the weather is bad stay low and watch the rail action in Newcastle and Auburn.
