Any word on the Bachmann HO Scale Climax?
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, December 21, 2004 9:27 AM
This engine has been coming out for quite some time now, still no word. I went to their website and the "Ask Bach-man" and got the following screen:

"This site is defaced!!!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NeverEverNoSanity WebWorm generation 19.
Something is wrong. You need to edit common.php and select a database."

Looks like the Bach Man has troubles!

Their site does list several Climaxes, indicating they can be ordered online. Not at the list price of $275.00 thank you!

Anyone else have any info on the availability at better prices?

Thanks! [:D]

the Climax Engines are shipping out this week. They should be available right before Christmas.

Straight from Bachmann to my inbox this morning:

Ring in the holidays with an Spectrum® HO scale Climax. Our On30 Climaxes shipped earlier this season, and now the HO models join them on their way to all steam modelers who've managed to stay off Santa's "naughty" list.

Spectrum® HO 50 Ton Class B Two Truck Climax $275.00 SHIPPING NOW

Inspired by one of only four remaining operational Climaxes, this Spectrum® model also represents one of the last Climaxes to be used in revenue service, eventually ending its illustrious industrial career in the late 1960s. The standard gauge prototype still operates in tourist service on the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad in Durbin, West Virginia. In the tradition of our award-winning Spectrum® HO Scale 80 Ton, Three-Truck Shay, we’re pleased to offer HO modelers this exciting geared locomotive.

Features include:

• DCC ready
• die-cast construction
• 5-pole skew wound motor
• all-wheel electrical pickup
• three-gearbox power train for realistic operation
• scale-speed gearing
• detailed cab interior
• amber LED headlight and backup light
• separately applied stack, domes, and cab
• separate detail parts, including bell, whistle, pop valves, and handrails

Spectrum® On30 28-Ton, Class B Two Truck Climax $275.00 SHIPPING NOW

In the late 1800s, the Climax Locomotive Works paved the way for geared locomotive development with innovative designs and improvements to existing technology. One such offering was the 28-Ton Two Truck Climax. With a horizontal boiler, this version of the Class B Climax offered more power and efficiency than its T-boiler predecessors. The successful 28-Tonner was produced until 1904 and continued in scattered service into the early 1950s. We’re pleased to add the On30 Two Truck Climax to our award-winning roster of geared locomotives.

Features include:

• DCC ready
• sound ready
• 5-pole, skew-wound motor
• prototypical center gearbox distributes power to two truck gearboxes
• three cab styles (double-panel wood; single-panel wood; and steel cab with modern headlights, generator, and air pump)
• die-cast frame, cab, and boiler
• wood, coal, or oil load

Thanks for the replies! I started checking on my own, and indeed did find they were starting to become available. One dealer quoted $159.00, another $137.50 ( http://www.wholesaletrains.com/ ). Both are a long way from the MSRP of $275.00!

Wholesale Trains is a very nice company. I bought my Spectrum 2-6-6-2 C&O weathered there. It was a steal! ($199.99) They shipped it that day and I got it in about 5 days! Highly recommended. [:D]

Now, any word on the Mikado they keep showing on the Trainworld/Trainland advertizement pages in MR? I asked about this loco previous and someone came back saying this was going to be a Chinnese loco. However, it looks to American to me.
Where are there some photos of the Climax?

The engine IS American, mostly. Bachmann made a limited run of a Chinese SY Mikado, which was copied from a Baldwin sold to China before 1949. The Chinese built these engines into the late 1980s (!) and sold three to the USA. One was lost in a typhoon, but the other two are in Iowa and New Jersey.

While the model has lots of details that scream foreign, it's really a USA engine underneath, and can be redetailed to look like a pre-USRA mike pretty easily. I'm hoping that Bachmann eventually uses the drive train to come out with some "real" American prototype Mikes!
