Are you asking if there is an F unit shell that will fit a Proto 1000 F unit chassis? I think that is your question.

.

I think the answer is there are "GOBS" of them out there. All F units (except FTs and FPs) share the same wheelbase and truck style, so any shell should be made to fit.

.

Do you have a really good Proto 1000 chassis?

.

Highliners or Intermountain shells are tops, but hard to assemble. Athearn shells are plentiful, but not too well detailed.

.

There are so many options.

Why?  The usual problem is that someone has an old or poorly-working engine with a nice detailed shell, possibly custom, and wants to restore it to keep the shell.

Is there a particular railroad you're looking for?

I would say your best bet would be to check train shows and swap meets, and then maybe eBay.  If nothing else, look for models that are not very popular on closeout.

Maybe lets start at the beginning.

So, you already have a Proto 1000 F7 chassis, and shell, and you want to remove the F7 shell and replace it with something else?

Or, you have just the Proto 1000 chassis and you want to find an F7 shell that will fit?

Start with explaining just exactly what it is you want to do.

I was thinking he was talking about putting a B unit shell on Proto chassis.

Athearn, Stewart, Proto, and maybe Intermountain could fit.

I have an A & B units both powered and I don't  have Long trains. So I thought I'd replace one of the units shell with a different road name and put its sheLloyd on a dummy unit.

The sad truth is that a dummy unit would cost almost as much as a powered unit.  That's the economics of why they don't make dummies.

If these are sound engines, just use them both and enjoy the dual engine sounds and reliability of the consist.

OK, I Get that.  There are many shells in Ebay, brands like what Jim mentioned in his post.  I guess I would start there.  Proto 1000 or 2000 shells would probably be your best bet, but I would also do some searching around, for someone who has done this, and similar projects.

There was a thread on here, where a list was started, from different members experiences, which might come up with a simple Google search.  I just did a search for "What shells fit a proto 1000 f7".  The thread I mentioned was on the top of the list, along with many others.

As Kevin talks about, it seems that truck spacing is what makes the difference.

I'm going to fit an Athearn GP7 shell, on the drive of a P2K GP7/9.  I just need to file off some of the weight that is in the nose of the P2K.  I just have the chassie for P2K, and my favorite, already detailed and painted, GP7 Athearn shell.

Mike.

EDIT:  OK, I tried 3 times to get the link live, a guess I forgot how.  Copy and past.
