I always, always check my posts before submitting. If there's a word I'm not sure of the spelling on I'll go into my word processing program and get the correct spelling. but then, I probably still have some mistakes. Sometimes I'll go back and look at my post at a later time, or after I just posted it and find a mistake. Thankfully they have an "edit" feature for that.

A busy thread with three pages of posts, and if I post on page 2, when I come back, I have to scan through post after post to find where I left off. And if I was reading but not posting, I have to remember whwich posts I have read and which not. The simple go to first new post feature makes that simple. Our hosts offer a complete model train experience; their forums are intended to mimic the experience on has at your local hobby shop where you have to get on your knees, reach high, and bring a flashlight to see the stuff stacked two or three deep, way back there in the shadows. It's an experience one really must have as often as possible. There's no other quite like it.
My browser adds spell check to every forum I use but this one, I wish it did work here.
I just wonder how these voice recognition thingies would cope with the different German accents? They are so far apart from what is known as "High German", on which the systems are based, that I doubt they are much better than what was shown in the skit. I live near Hamburg, but my place already has a different accent! Folks from Hamburg are lost in Bavaria, Saxony or Swabia.
I remember my car phone having that feature - it hardly ever worked!

Agree. We all have a few things we do well. Making the best effort when interacting with others, well I consider that an axiom. My kid's fingers move so fast when they are texting, the difference in writing something properly or in slang in measured in milliseconds.

I agree trying your best to use good spelling, punctuation and proper etiquette is a good practice. I always give anything I write at least a once-over before I send or post it. It's a good idea.
You know.... Our words are a reflection of us and how people perceive you. Especially if they can't see you when your talking.
We are all human. We all make mistakes. There is nothing wrong with that. I think as long as I try my best that is what's most important.

PS. For me I don't think using a little slang or goofy words once in a while is inappropriate. Especially if you're trying to make something funny or describe something out of the ordinary..... Too Flatline all the time can be a little dry.
Odd thing about this site is that spell-check works just fine in the PM messaging feature. Wonder why that would be?
When this "new-and-improved" iteration of the forum was rolled out (three years ago?) it was buggy and I frequently had several paragraphs of text disappear when I clicked "Submit Your Reply". As a work-around I would compose in Word then copy-paste here. That got tedious and over time the site became a little more reliable.
Now, after posting, I re-read my text and pick out any suspicious looking spellings, highlight them, copy and <Crtl-V> the word into the Free Dictionary site just to be sure.
I recall the mantra of some of my elementary school teachers, if you don't know how to spell a word just look it up in a dictionary.
It took me forever to find out how to spell opossum!
Now I have to go, I need to knead the dough.

"That which is written in haste is often read without pleasure." Punctuation and standardizations on spelling were necessary for effective communication, and invented long before you could call someone up and ask them, "Did you proof-read your last text to me?"
I can't tell you how many times I have reread some of what I wrote long ago and told myself, "Darn, that was really GOOD!" Then, reading a bit further, I am brought suitably low when I see obvious errors in composition.
It's a skill folks. Just like math, languages, using the 'realistic' skills for those who use their hands and tools to make things. That's why we took 'composition' in grade school. Some get A's, some get D's. Some can build a boat house, some pay others to do it. What's your time worth?
I think most of us can overlook, or wade through, the run-on prose often found by those who use their smart phones to communicate, including here. Yes, it's an open avenue to judging someone. With a little focus and good will, we should be able to get to the nub of their argument and either skewer it or agree with it without getting personal.

The use of proper English is essential for a correct mutual understanding! Maybe I owe it to my age, my educational background and the fact that English is not my native language, but I find it difficult to comprehend posts done in "texting" style. I agree 100% with Ulrich. Writing well is good manners in my book. If you are communicating with someone, you should do it properly, it is just good etiquette, much like saying please and thank you, both require a very little effort to do and speak volumes about you, especially in job interviews.
My kids know I won't respond to their text unless properly spelled and punctuated, so I will often get two texts in a row from them, the second one written properly.
I am just a *** with a high school education that worked in the elements usually loading things on to airplanes, however, long incident reports and operational planning reports that I was asked write had me meeting with top bureaucrats, Government Ministers, and Senators more than a few times. One Senator even commented on how well written my report was. I said,"that's what a high school education will do for you". He said, "I guess our education system must be pretty good".

I suspect they used a poor company, low budget, kid in his bedroom, to upgrade a few years ago. Spell check went away and I don't recall the powers to be making any comments.
I use an Open Office App to spell check for me. Copy and paste into the message. About the same as MS Office.
I have a tendency to reverse a couple letters at times. teh instead of the is a small example.

I use Grammarly as my spell checker. It's quite effective at correcting not only spelling errors but grammar and punctuation.

One can use a voice text app. It usually spells things correct 95% of the time. It will confuse words like (two,too,and to) so you still have to go back and manually edit things before you post. I still find it faster than typing. This system works really well if you're not a good typer, and also very well if you are prone to making spelling mistakes.

I thought browsers came with automatic spell check but somehow it doesn't work on this forum. I wish it did because I hate the hassle of having to cut and paste from a word processor. But spell check can't fix everything. Mistake will be maid.
