I have 1st run and 2nd run Life-Like Proto 2000 0-8-0s and each of them runs VERY smoothly. As Stix mentioned, the 2nd runs came with the additional pickup in the tender so they were better over insulated/non-powered frogs and didn't stall.

Sounds like a decoder problem. Try factory reset as suggested. Fact that the whistle blows suggests some CVs are messed up.
Proto 2000 steam engines generally run very well, although some early Life-Like ones didn't pick up electricity through the tender trucks, so would stall like on a crossing or turnout.
sounds like a bad decoder.
Hello guys, A close frined is having a problem with a Lifelike Proto 2000 0-8-0 that he recently acquired. The loco runs fine in forward and all sounds operate correctly, but when you put it in reverse, it does not move and just blows the whistle. Any ideas? I am thinking bad sound decoder?
