It is just one of those things that reminds me of a new job scenerio. Say you start a job as fire fighter and it is your first few months. When you have a question you most likely direct it to the person with more seniority or who has been there the longest simply because you feel they have been around longer to know any answer you may have. It is a natural thing to trust the word of a long time member as opposed to a 30 post responder. Crazy but alot of guys must feel that way about that. I am sure it is vise versa for the big posters too. Some one may feel inside that they are more knowledgable or experienced because they have 3 stars or 300+ post. that person may think that they have "Put in their time" as a listener/student and now have become teachers/mentors. I do not care because even though I am new to this forum I know one thing, I can model my [censored] off! I love to work on my layout and it is mine. I know my layout more than anyone with 2,3, or 5 stars because I built it. Plus I may know more about a subject than a dude with 325 post ya know. The guy with the most post may be the most idiotic person too. (no offense to that #1 poster) Well I do not even have one star, UH OH. What I am saying may not mean jack. [;)]

Some of the most knowledgable men/women have been here for years but have low post count cause they have busy jobs that keep them from the forum or they feel the need to only post in topics they know extremely well.

It should be about the QUALITY of the post you make and not the number of posts you make.

I agree with these guys! This is a great service that Kalmbach offers us, and plenty of great ideas and interesting discussions show up regularly, often from folks who rarely post . Jennifer

Notwithstanding the stated purpose of the forum - "Advice, tips, questions and general information on the hobby" (italics added) - found on the forum selection page. But I was told by a moderator that non-model RR topics are okay anyway.

I stand corrected, "NOT NECESSARILY TRAIN SPECIFIC" with the emphasis on "NOT NECESSARILY", it's still not "Life and Death" Now that we've got all that straightened out, what say we put this puppy to BED as I suggested earlier, before someone with a thorn under his saddle blanket decides to take a really cheap shot, and this whole thing blows up in our faces...Guys it just AIN"T worth it. Everyone has their own opinion, so lets agree to respect that.....10-4?????

Well I guess all I can really say about that is this, "Thats their thing, disregard it and read on. I guess it's really the same as some topics on here, you and others may consider them nonsense, but this is, after all, a "General Discussion Forum" not "Train Specific", and most folks come here not just for info but also the social aspect. Enjoy and don't take this, or any other forum serious. This isn't a life or death situation.

No way to measure the quality, but I would say this, no matter how many stars you have, or anyone else has, this is a HOBBY, nothing more, nothing less. The fact that some responses are of higher quality than others, is strictly in the eyes of the be-holder. This means simply this, some responses will answer a question directly and some won't, but all will have one thing in mind, and that is to make this as FUN a hobby as possible. Don't be so ready to discount someones responses just because they don't seem of high quality, by your definition, or aren't relevant to your question. Many times these guys just want to have a little fun first, then get down to facts afterwards. As I've said many times before, if you're a member of a Club where you live, you don't always talk MRR'ing when you go do you...Just pitch in and have fun, all your questions will be answered at the liesure of the other folks that post here, weather they have 1 star or 5 stars, just be patient and enjoy the humor along with the facts.

No offence taken, but this subject has been the source of much friction between certain people on here in the past and has started more than a few weekend WARS. Some have gotten real serious. For the sake of keeping piece, we might want to consider putting this puppy to bed, right now. 10-4???

re: Quality of posts.

Some forums allow each member to filter the posts displayed. If you decide that member 'xyz99' is a goof ball and never posts anything you want to see, you just put that in your profile and you will never see anything from 'xyz99' again. Does save time, I guess, but I can't say I really like it.

What I would like to see is a forced check of spelling. Some of the spelling (or misspelling) I see in trains.com forums just makes me cringe. There are many times when I skip reading a post because the spelling makes the whole thing unintelligible.

I prefer to post only when I have something to say, rather than just to flap my keyboard at everyone.

Remember its just a post,no more than a click to get to or away from.I usually look to the big guys with all the stars first when looking for info but that doesn't allways apply.I to normally only post when i think my view point can be usefull, weather or not the members feel the same way about the post well such is life.I think the rating system is ok as long as our egos aren't included

There are two great things about this forum: 1) the expertise of the folks who post here. Not a day goes by that I don't learn a lot from the people here; 2) the sense of community. There are no "ranks," per se. Folks post as much or as little as they like. But the number of marginal posts is, well, marginal. [:D]

QUOTE: Zeph: ...it is a pity they can't find some way to measure the quality of content rather than just quantity...

By the time you've hung around a while and read a bunch of posts, you start to form your own idea of who posts worthwhile answers.

One of the nice things about the forum is that you really never know where a good answer is going to come from. It could come from one of the more experienced posters, or from someone relatively new who just happens to have some first hand experience with the problem you're asking about.
