Wayne --

Those look good. I think I'll try them. Thanks for the tip!

Hmmm...Looks like the photos didn't attach?

See the "how to post photos" sticky at the top. You can't just paste them in, you need to host them on a web site somewhere and link to them.

Ed, Detail Associates has drop steps similar to those shown in the link that you posted.  They come with several different bases, and can be modelled either "up" or "down".

I used them on these Blue Box geeps...

...and on these Athearn switchers, converted to SW1200RS models...

ATSF Guy -

I modeled CNJ GP7 #1523. Back in 1963 as a pre-teen railfan I prowled around what was the thriving Dunellen, NJ engine terminal, roundhouse and coach yard. By 1963, virtually nothing was left but a single siding where, with my Kodak Brownie Starmite camera I took the photo you see below.

My next step is to weather the GEEP.

Thanks for your interest!

To Dave & Ed --

The L-L kit has a variety of parts like MU connection boxes, but no steps, so the tip about the SW9/1200 is great.

It amazes me that there is so much info and wisdom out there.

Thanks to you both!

The Life Like P2K SW9/1200 switchers have a similar step on the front.

I'll have to take a look but if I recall, lots of my L-L geeps came with a parts bag with front drop-steps and sundry M-U plugs and all-weather cabs, winterization hatches and the like.

I believe you had to drill your own holes if you wanted the step up (vertical holes) or down (horizontal holes).

I'll get back to you...

cannot find two items that are pretty prominent: The front platform step

Hi Ed:

The Life Like P2K SW9/1200 switchers have a similar step on the front. It is a bit shorter but it does have the rounded front edge. It mounts differently in that it is attached to the top of the front platform as opposed to being built in to the front, level with the platform, like the GP7 you linked to.

Who knows, maybe you can find a shell for cheap.

Good luck,

Dave

I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!

Thanks from another Ed!

I have been looking for Alco RS steam generator intake and the unique slanted stack. Here they are Yes

Great to have a network of "eyes" out there!

NYand LB_Fan, love your avatar!  One of my uncles worked for Public Service for 30+ years.  About two years ago I bought a Public Service baseball cap at a train show outside Washington DC (had the old triangle logo on it) and the seller gave me a funny look.

"You're not from around here, are you?"

"No," I said, I moved here from New Jersey 28 years ago!"

By the way, know what that red triangle stands for?

Site bookmarked - they have the equipment boxes for the front of the fireman's side of the RS-3's I need. Thanks!

CNJ GP7 Details
Posted by cnjman721 on Saturday, September 23, 2017 2:46 PM

I just completed an old Life Like Proto Series GP7, painted and decaled for CNJ road switcher duty. I want to add some prototype details but cannot find two items that are pretty prominent: The front platform step and the CNJ style classification lights. I've just gone through hundreds and hundreds of HO parts available on eBay and no luck. Part of the problem may be that sometimes when it comes to these detail parts, the catalog illustrations are really bad. I found an old Kemtron brass front step but its very different from the more simply styled CNJ prototypes which appear identical to this PRR model I spotted on PRRho.com

http://www.prrho.com/index.html

Any suggestions out there?

Many thanks,

Ed
