I have a question on couplers for  alco pa 10 AA set ho diesels. I was given these and they have no couplers. I have no makers name just the powered diesel is 5008-A and they are Chicargo and North Western. I am new to this and struggle to identify models/types etc  Can anyone assist me please  I live in Australia.

As I said in my first forum, I struggle to indentify locos.  I have been madly searching and I believe that the locos are F7A AA with three axle trucks and short nose.

I just did a Google search on "CNW 5008-A"

The first hit shows Utah Rails' CNW engine index, and says that 5008-A is an E-7A by EMD.

The second hit is a link to MTH, showing their HO scale EMD E-7.  Does that look like your model?

If so, just do a Google search on "Kadee couplers for MTH E-7" and let us know what you find.

Hi, Welcome to the Forum.

If these diesels have 3 axle trucks, they are either E units or PAs.  Given they are labeled C&NW, I would say they are E units.

Typically you can use Kadee #146s on diesels.  They are a long shank, which will help the locos not binding with the cars they pull on less than really large radius curves.

The mfg of what you have is uncertain with the details you provided.  A pic of the topside and underside would really help.  Usually there is some identification on the chassis, and a look at the innards might help.

Also, is it DC or DCC, sound or no sound..........

Welcome to the forum, sometimes a post gets pushed down the list and lost by newer posts.

F7 is later than my era, but from what I see on Ebay, they weren't 3 axle trucks. 

The 5008 is an important clue, there is a BLI 5008 on ebay, 3 axle truck, E7A's http://tinyurl.com/y9yzckor

If that's not yours, either post a picture here (you HAVE TO follow the directions of the Sticky in the General Forum to post a pic) or keep looking on ebay until you find your locos.

Then go to the kadee.com site and look up the coupler.  BLI's are 148 & 158

My guess is that the model is a Proto 2000 E7. I found one on eBay to compare it too.

According to Kadee it needs a 26 in the front and a 23 on the end.

Compare your model with the pictures on the instructions. If the mounts are the same then this is the correct model.

On my Proto E-units, I've used Kadee no.5s. On A units, you do need to either use the long-shank ones on the front, or remove the trip pin under the coupler. Recently, I've changed some to have the scale head Kadees on the front, just because it looks better.

Kadee #26 is the long shank version of #5. I use them on my Athearn blue box locomotives which have aftermarket snowplows. And #23 is the short shank version of #5. I have never used #23. They are for closer coupling to look more realistic but they might cause a problem on tight radius curves.

Thanks to everyone who responded. I now know it is a EMD7A and I have a good idea what to look for in couplers.

Technically it's an EMD E7A...EMD was the builder, Electro-Motive Division of General Motors.

Three axles and a short nose sounds like an E. The manufacturer should be identified on the bottom of the fuel tank. Once you figure that out, visit the Kadee coupler conversion site: https://kadee.com/conv/hocc.htm
