I see the December 2018 MR mag. is still on the shelf at my local grocery store chain. Nothing current on MR

I have noticed a decline in the stores that carry model railroad magazines.  But I have also noticed that many stores just carry fewer magazines.  Barnes and Noble bookstore is the only store I go to with a really good selection of magazines and that's a 45 minute drive for me.

Seems like Kalmbach is putting more project work into MRVP lately than MR.

Unfortunately, it seems Kalmbach is spending more effort almost everywhere except Model Railroader. Thinner and less "meat" all the time. Extra cost items bring in more money.

This is the same elsewhere, magazines are out, videos are in. This is just the way society is moving. Alot has changed with the advances in technoligy, most people no longer have land lines for phones and for most that do it is a backup. I personally have a backup but it is another cell phone. Who still has a subscription to a print newspaper (for me it has been a long time). What the future holds, who knows but things will still change as far as media, unfortinatly I see model railroad magazines going away, at least in print form, just like hobby shops. Hobby shops are closing for many reasons but one that is never brought up is they cannot have even a fraction of what is available today (sounds like I need to start a thread which I will).

I see the December 2018 MR mag. is still on the shelf at my local grocery store chain. Nothing current on MR. I guess the buyers for the stores don't think that the magazine sells. Maybe it's just this store? I liked the magazine. I guess I'll just get it at the LHS, for as long as it may be in business. Even though I've always paid top dollar (cover price) for the magazine. I never thought magazine staff needed to have a layout in there house, they just needed to know about the hobby. As I was told by an old hobby shop owner years ago, "You don't want to be in the hobby and own a hobby shop.". He was talking about model trains. I still think about that and wonder.

He was looking for a buyer for his business.

Excellent! Besides recently switching from N Scale to HO for dexterity reasons, I also have two O gauge starter sets (that I’m adding on to) that I’m try to find Layout room for.

It's true. MRVP is planning a 3-rail project in conjunction with our sister publication, Classic Toy Trains. It won't appear in MR.

Yes and I for one intend to follow it even though my 3 rail set is relegated to a shelf most of the time.

I imagine that Cody will have more time, space, and money for a home layout when his still-quite-young children are grown. If Cody can muster the patience to wait for that day, surely you folks can, too. Don't pester the man. Smile

In much the way the people of Rock Ridge revere Randolph Scott...

Linn Westcott would!

Well, sort of - Jim Hediger tells it best. Remember his was one fo the first multi-deck layouts, pretty much uncharted territory, mostly based on some suggestions from Linn.

With all due respect for Mr Popp;  when are we going to see a home layout (regardless of scale) in the Grivno home?

When he builds one. When that happens is up to him. We don't tell our staff members what they should do in their own homes.

I'm not saying "tell him";  a strongly worded suggestion would suffice.

I always enjoyed the annual employee layout tour. I think the last one was 2015. Any plans to start it up again, Steve?

Not for the foreseeable future. We've lost a number of employees who used to be on the tour, some have taken their layouts down, and a number of others have made no visible progress on their layouts in a while (that would be yours truly Embarrassed). I enjoyed them, too, but until there's some progress to show, there won't be another Progress Tour.

They do - Canadian Canyons, for example, is slated to appear in the magazine in the coming year.

Seems like Kalmbach is putting more project work into MRVP lately than MR.  Would love to see these more closely tied with an article in MR that ties directly to that month's MRVP project.  If anyone remembers the long ago series in NGSLG "Up Clear Creek On the Narrow Gauge" that style would go well with a combinated MRVP/MR on going saga.

Wonder how many people are writing in complaining they do nothing but HO, thent hey do an N scale layout "how come you guys do so much N scale". Now they are going to do a scale O layout - I don't think there EVER has been a scale O layout as a project railroad in MR history. Even layout visits, only two I cna immediately name are Lorell Joiner's Great Southern and John Armstrong's Canandaigua Southern. And now the complainers will write in that they spend too much time on O scale....

It's like how back in the day, they published a John Allen phtoto, after having nothing by or about John for many many months. Immediately a complaint letter "too much John Allen". John DID at the time recently had a series published in RMC....

I'm actually looking forward to this one, if only to see how the typical construction techniques carry over to a scale twice the size of that they usually work in. And going from N to O - it's going to look positively huge in contrast. Do I have any O scale? Nope, but I will still enjoy the series. I'm not much for modern railroading, and I do HO, not N, yet I am enjoying the Canadian Canyons layout.

BigDaddy

It's definitely not 3 rail.

That's going to be the next MRVP project layout after the Canadian Canyons.

David is producer for Model Railroader Video Plus, and doesn't work directly for Model Railroader magazine any more. So not everything he does appears in the magazine. His current basement project is an extension for the On30 Olympia Logging Co. layout, the results of which can be seen in the ongoing MRVP series "Olympia 2: The Log Blog."

David Popp's new layout?
Posted by Benjamin Maggi on Thursday, August 10, 2017 9:08 AM

I haven't seen anything in MR or online about David's current/new layout. Is it a big secret? I heard rumors online that he sold his previous New Haven layout so that he could build a new one for articles for MR. But, I haven't seen any articles.
