AlexanderYeah I found a lifelike F40PH at an old yard sale for FREE. Didn't run. One look at the insides was enough to steer me off from even trying to referbrish it. Better to get a Walthers one and super detail it.
Or a Rapido, and NOT super detail it.

I have a pair of the Walthers Proto 2000 RS-27 locos with QSI sound. No problems whatsoever, smooth runners, strong pullers. You will be pleased.
No problems with cracked gears but the gear problems with the older Life Life diesels were primarily with the GPs and SDs. I have not heard of any problems with RS-27s.

AlexanderThanks! It's one thing to watch video testimonials by 5 year olds filming vertically and another to get advice from a experienced person.

I owned several and they were amazing...best Alco diesels ever modeled in HO plastic. I say that because some others have body fit issues. Best handrails of any HO rtr diesel...flexible delrin, very difficult to break, and very close to scale. Appear to be very accurate models...I did own the RS27 book. They run very well indeed!
I am just a steam fan and have no diesels at all now.

RS-27 should be post Walthers buying them and not subject to cracked axles but not 100% sure, only about 98% :-)
They run smooth and sound good either way.
FYI: If it does turn out to have the cracked gear issue I've heard the swap out for the Athearn gears is pretty straightforward.

Time...It marches on...without ever turning around to see if anyone is even keeping in step.
If it's a Proto 2000, beware of cracked gears, you'll need the Athearn set to replace them.
I've got one. Still in the box. I've never heard a bad word about them, and many good ones.
Alexander,
I don't have one of their RS-27s but I do own a Proto S1, F3, H10-44, GP38-2, and 0-8-0 switcher and they all run VERY smoothly. I think you'll be very happy with one.
I would love having an ALCO RS-27 on my layout, and have found lots of proto models for sale online. I don't see anyone else notable that makes RS-27s and (never owning a proto before) began to question how close these models acually get to the prototype. Also smooth running is a big deal breaker for me so it's a must. Anyone who has had expiring with proto locos (especially the rs-27) please clarify if these locos are any good. Thanks.
