Good morning, everybody ...

Ed ... That looks like a great family get together! .... Thanks for sharing.... I saw your model of a NYC stem generator car in the other thread. So, I posted my GN heater car too.

Ulrich .... We appreciate your posts, and encourage you to continue with us.

Ken ... Your comment to Ulrich about being with friends makes sense. Have you seen Frank Z-Stripe lately ?

Galaxy ... I assume you are doing well, but feel free to visit the Diner when you can.

As I said, I posted photos of my current brdge project in WPF. I am continuing to work on that project this week.

FRRYKid

Sometimes beads and trains crossover as well. (I also have some small beads that will eventually be used to represent clam shells on some sandbars, too.)

Being headquartered in the same building with a beading magazine, we've found a few model railroad uses for beads:

  • Glass insulators on O scale line poles.
  • Crushed clear, brown, and green glass beads for a brewery's cullet (scrap glass) gondola load.
  • Counterweights for the spout on a scratchbuilt water tank.
  • As vases for a display in an HO scale florist shop window.

I'm sure people have thought of others...

Steve: On the mrr bead applications Front, one question. I'm trying to super-detail the Peco body shell for their N3n 0-6-0 steam loco (which runs on a Marklin Z chassis)  The grab irons (brass bars about 1" diameter in the prototype) are supported by stand-offs which end in spherical knobs through which the bars pass. So, to model those knobs, I'd need a bead about 3 N Scale inches = 0.019" so, tiny! do such beads exist? If so, where would one look for them?

In the mean time I'll just continue with the usual bent wire North American type grab irons. They at least are within my failing powers!

BTW, gang, I'm still around, but home and yard concerns as well as ploughing ahead with the N3n project have meant less Diner Time. I'll post a report when I've got things to a stage you might find more interesting; such as the painted loco with (planned) painted stripe panels in many places. The couplers came from MicroTrains today and I have toassemble them. Never done a Z knuckle coupler before.....

I share the date with you, happy birthday to us!  Happy B-Day  For me, it's number 68.

Really got chased inside this afternoon, about 2 pm CDST, in SE WI.,big storm.  Cranberry sized hail, it covered the ground!  For a few minutes, it was like a white-out of hail.

Good afternoon all!

Zoe - A RBF please. Thanks!

Ulrich - Just don't go into total hiding on us...

Others - Hi!

Night at the Musem -

As I had mentioned before, the local Rail museum held their annual Night at the Museum event over the last weekend.... Yes, I brought a couple of pics!

First up, their newest acquired unit, you may have caught a glimpse in the TrainWire...

Chessie Night

Yes, the night photo shoot surrounded the new Chessie..

Lion spoke of cats on trains.... Yep, this train has a cat on it!

I also caught a few CSX Trains while there... Here is the proof.

CSX WB

CSX EB

All in all, it was fun!

Weather - Cooler today! Its only 75! YAY!!!!

W*%k - Sold a nice tractor on Saturday night, just before close.

Trains - I also atended a local (Model) train show on Saturday morning... Came home with a couple of railcars.

NS Hopper

I also posted a progress shot in WPF of my assembled NS Covered hopper -

I have a base coat of weathering on the truck sideframes, of a dark chocolate brown.... I almost wonder if I should lighten it a bit? Not too sure though, I like them dark, but not black plastic colored...

Sideframes

Not entirely sure if I should change the base color, or just highlight the bearing caps and springs, then grime coat the highlights...

Hope all are well, and all enjoy the day!

None that small, no. The smallest I've heard of are size 15/0, which like wire gauges, refers to the number that can fit in an inch. So 1/15 of an inch = .067". And since the hold in a bead has to be able to pass through a needle and several strands of beading thread, the holes are probably bigger than you need, too. For N scale, I'd suggest modeling that knob with a dab of gap-filling CA applied with a toothpick. Then paint the grab iron when the glue is good and dry.

Thanks Steve- That's a great idea. See my favourite quote "There are always alternatives, Captain!" So, yes, "a little dab'll do ya!" (Takes one back that, what?) I'll see if the crazy glue dabs look like what I'm after (on an off-model trial piece, naturallyWhistling) Those grabs will be over-painted brass once the main loco body colour is on. (Blue - I picked up a Tamiya X4 Blue at the LHS on Saturday)

Good evening Diners,

Brunhilda, I'll have a cup of Earl Grey tea with cream and honey, please.

YGW:  Congratulations on your 21st birthday.  May you have many more.

WinkWinkBig SmileBig Smile

Mike:  Congratulations or condolences on your birthday, whichever apply.

I've been trying to post a photo from Drop Box.  Haven't gotten it down, yet.  Any advice or help would be very welcomed.

Yesterday, for Father's Day, my family took me to Navy Pier to see the Rolling Stones exhibition.  I was never a giant Stones fan, but I always liked a lot of their music.  I've an awful lot of respect for Keith Richards as a guitar player.  He could do more with 3 chords than just about anyone.  Anyway, the exhibit was very interesting.

Has anyone heard from V8Dennis?  He hasn't been in in quite awhile.  Hope all is ok.

Hello to everyone, and I hope everyone is OK and safe.

Less is more,...more or less!

I haven't been here for a while, it looks like.  The divorce has reached the point where I always knew it would, the point where the trrain layout must come down and the house must be sold.

It's a sad time, besides being a lot of work.  I've put 13 years into this layout, 13 good years.  If all goes well, I'll be setting it up again one of these days.  What will undoubtedly be a different space will give me a chance to fix some of the layout's shortcomings, hopefully.

Good morning.  Watch them fix up a boxcar on the Chama.  The resolution could be better but I watched someone either fall off a ladder or tripp and fall backwards.  His head came danger close to the rail.  He got up and continued to work so I guess he is OK.

I would like to go to Chama but the altitude is a little high for the wifey who is prone to altitude sickness.  Their safety standards are quite different than Durango.  They allow photographers free roam up and down the tracks while the trains are moving and only a fraction of the yard workers wear safety orange or hard hats.  It's their railroad, they can do what they want.

Lunch time !

Flo I have some Ice Cream birthday cake left over please share the rest with who ever wants a slice.

Thank you all for the happy birthday wishes ! Big Smile. I have to brag on MOH. Yesteray she surprised me. I was all set to head home and probably not have much in the way of celebration. BUT she drove an hour to my work place, with my three daughters, then took me to Olive Garden ( I LOVE their salads ) and paid for our dinner. At the end they brought out small aple crisp desert with a candle and sang happy birthday to me - and the table next to us clapped !!! We had a wonderful time.

Henry - Really no safety vest ? The person in charge there is opening themselves up to a good lawyer sueing the pants off of them and possible jail time. Safety is very serious business. In our neck of the woods a supervisor was just sentenced to many years of prison for unsafe working conditions on the job where someone was injured...

Ed - LOl you should enlighten them quick !

JaBear - You are wise beyond your years - it is a dangerous buisness revealing a womens age !

Ken - This year I didnt get cardboard !!! It was very small apple crisp with vanilla ice cream on top and I shared it with everyone !

Mike - Happy birthday to you too ! The 19th was a good day with us both being born that day !

Der - glad you are back ! How is things going ?

Howmus - Lunch is on me today if you are hungry. Thank you for your replies in the PM.

Garry, Yannis, JaBear, UP831....thank you all for the birthday wishes.

We have a lot of AWOL people. Who all are we missing ? Like mentioned earlier - V8 Vega, Galaxy, Ulrich...Who elsel do we have missing ???? Maybe we should have a round up ?

If you're happy with the ungrimed frame as in the photo, I'd leave it be. I've had success with highlighting the springs (actually I made them rusty, which prototypical springs generally aren't, IIRC) The rusty colour made them stand out better, though. Bearing caps should be easy to dry brush. Under the magnification the my Picture Manager gives when one crops a photo, I see that handling over the years has not been kind to the paint on this Well Car's side frames: but you can see the springs. I used a fine brush.

Good morning from an unusually muggy West Coast.

Had to get up early and drive into YVR to pick up my Sister and her husband as they just got back from OZ. That is a very long flight up the middle of the Pacific. They had a medical emergency on the way, a lady had a big drop in blood preasure apparently, however, there were lots of Doctors on board and they had the lady plugged into IVs and feeling shipshape pretty quick, so no need to go down in Hawaii.

My wife and I were flying to Hawaii once and the flight attendant came up tp my wife and said it had appeared that a boy at the back of the plane had broken his arm. My wife informed the attendant that she was a Vet, however, there were no other Doctors on board. My wife told me to come along in case she needed me to sit on the kid.Laugh She immobilized the arm and we carried on to the tropics.

My Sister flys all over the world as a dog show judge and often takes hubby with her. He has a thing about trying to visit Costco's in every country they visit. Well here is a product they sell in the Canberra Costco that they don't sell in Canada. How about in the U.S?

They took a Rail excursion on an old steamer and this sign from 1864 was on the platform.

Kid  got cast in several episodes of a show "Dirk Gently's" We have never heard of it, however, it is quite popular apparently. Considering the amount of work he does in the industry, he watches very little TV. He has to catch up on Netflix so he can know what the show is about and fit in better. This is the first time he has been "cast" and not brought in as an extra. Pay is really good for a kid just graduating high school.

Ed, that sure looks like a beautiful place you have there. We wouldn't be able to keep our Goldens out of that lake though.

YGW and Mike, a belated Happy B-Day hope it was good.

YGW, I always make the wife pay when we eat out just so her side of the credit card bill is pages long while mine only has a couple of tanks of diesel on it.Whistling

It is a very busy week around here with my son's graduation. Three big events happening, including going into Vancouver for the biggy at the Vancouver Trade and Convention Centre on Saturday night. Whatever happened to just walking across the stage at school shaking the principles hand, having a rubber chicken dinner in the gym and calling it a night.

I must be anti-social.Laugh

All the best to all, stay well.

There is heat, then there is heat. At 11:00 this morning it was already 111F. Yesterday we topped out around 117F and today is supposed to be about the same. I don't care how dry it is, once it clears 110F it is brutal. Yesterday American Airlines grounded their regional jets and cancelled al RJ flights out of Phoenix. The reason? The take-off specifications for the RJs do not go up to these temperatures. The hotter the air, the thinner the air. The thinner the air, the longer it takes for a plane to get off of the runway. Without the specifications, the planes are prohibited from taking off. They can land, but they can't leave. Tomorrow is supposed to be a degree or two cooler, then it will drop a few more degrees on Thursday.

Still looking for the exit ramp from retirement...

Had 1/2 of can of green beans and started feeling better? Did get around 2 hours of badly needed yard work done! Big Smile

Enjoying retirement since 2012 and my wife retires at the end of June. In February 2016 I survived a heart attack (runs in my family) and have been getting my exercise hiking along the geologically spectacular coastlines of the Bay of Fundy.

This is my 50th year playing acoustic guitar and I plan to start teaching private lessons this fall to advanced guitarists (students must be able to barre and play in any key without a capo). Also going to start a small business called GypsumWorks Nova Scotia selling stunning samples of gypsum to rock and mineral collectors.

Last week I took up golf again (used to golf in the early 70s) with a group of crazy country golfers from the Walton area, including the owner of two silos full of processed barite from the old mining mill. The golf course borders the high eroding cliffs of the Bay of Fundy and one of the club rules is not to go over the safety fence to look for a ball on the edge. A teacher did this a few years ago and tragically fell to his death when the cliff gave way underneath him.

Finally, today I acquired professionally bound volumes of Model Railroader and Railroad Model Craftsman from 1961 to 1983 - complete for both magazines. Excited to pick those up tomorrow evening.

Really enjoying painting my HO trains. Back to it now.

Evening Diners,

YGW- Happy Birthday! Like Mike say yesterday on having the same day. So does my dad he turned 57.

My railroading funk has ended. I'm back to original self.

Sadly it's way to hot and humidity being 102F. Our cooler is generating heat air than cold. The clouds turned grey twice in two evening but I know rail won't be coming down. Maybe next week, this week all sunny.

Der- I would like the process of that N3n railroad.

to the Diner. I've sent you a PM, seeing as how we share the same Province! (and that was sent before I read your bio, so please excuse the question about scale Black Eye) Hope you like it here, a genial bunch to be sure.

angelob:
I'll be posting progress pics once I'm through with the current loco project, but I can say that since April I've developed the tracks at the turntable and completed the tracks up to the "Tourist Castle" plus roughing in the parts of that castle through which the track run. (That's arches in the curtain walls between two sets of towers) I've also extended tracks away from the turntable towards a yet to be modeled quarry. If all goes well, I'll try to do a video - but it's been a while since I tackled that. Thanks for your interest.

Good evening all.

Flo - I brought some cheesecake for everyone... Can I have a Coke to go with it? Thanks.

Ken - While I appreciate the offer, my family would kill me... And, until I get the layout back up, I couldn't run them anyway. Really nice of you to offer though!

Trains - Yes, the layout is out of commission currently, that is why I have been doing little projects. A upcoming move prompted the layout to be partially dismantled, and then the move got delayed... I have been tempted to reinstall it, but about I get it back finished the move would happen... I might just do it anyways.

W*%k - Sold a "smart" air conditioner unit today... It will link with your smart phone, via an app, and you can turn it on from anywhere there is cell service. Not much else today though.

Everyone enjoy the cheesecake!

Hope all are well, and all have a good day!

der5997 & old school scratchbuilder - You guys are bringing back some great memories. In the 70s the wife & I spent a week in Nova Scotia. Best vacation we ever had. Took the ferry from Portland to Yarmouth then drove the different Trails, stayed in a new town each night. Do they still have the Lighthouse Trail, Cabot Trail, etc? Loved everywhere we went, Peggy's Lighthouse to Cape Breton to the Bay of Fundy. What a great time.

Evening Railfans!

Just stopped in to say howdy, collect on the drinks Ken has been buying me, and return the favor a few times. Nothin much goin around yee ole fence post lately. Had a nice long weekend out in the boonies. Quiet.

(boonies... translation = anywhere the internet doesnt exist. Same as boondocks, except no water.)

Saw a few UP units the other day. Which is unusual in the fact that this is NS country (with a smattering of CSX). UP - a very nice change of scenery lets say. Even the horns are pleasing, being different than the local flavors.

Per Railfan requesite  I snapped some pictures, walked along the units, and gave them a good going over visualwise. One unit possessed the scars of what looked like a dynamic brake meltdown. Was an enjoyable 20 minutes.
