New to posting, if fact I have never posted on any forum. My main intrest is in the Great Northern and in a few years when I can retire, my "box" railroad will hopefully will come out and become a running layout. Until then I have put together hundreds of kits, detailed and weathered them and , for the most part put them away. I have also made several dioramas and many craftsman type kits some with a very, at least I think, high level of detail. Now I am stumped.
I found two brass Tenshado 4-8-4 S-1s that I had put away and figured it was a good time to take them out and see if I could get them fixed up. Both are in peices and although I can figure out what piping goes where and such from the prototype, I am at a loss as to how to get the finished peices together. One had been dropped by the former owner and took some damage and broke the frame from the boiler.
So I am looking for any type of expanded assembly diagrams or whatever info that might have come in the orginal box. I have been unable to find anything on the internet.
Thanks
Pete: .... A BIG WELCOME to the forum !
Several years ago, I restored a Tenshodo NYC 4-6-4 that my Dad gave me when I was a kid. I was probbly too young for it at the time he gave it to me. It spent many years in pieces before I decided to restore it.
Now,it sits on a display shelf, and I think of it as an heirloom.
You may find it helpful to find old photos of the full sized locomotive on the GN. There should be some on the internet.
Have fun !

7j43k I've got that. Send me a message with contact info and I'll scan and send you a copy. Ed
It's been sent.

All of my brass locomotives have similar assemblies for the running gear and boiler/cab attachment. It is not difficult to find online articles on maintaining these.

The side rods and valve gear have always been my problem.

Hi Pete GN: I'm in a somewhat similar position as you. The S1 has been a favorite of mine for years and 9 years ago I bought one from ebay. While it is very heavy and a little noisy and somewhat tempermental I love it. Problem is every other year the pilot truck becomes unfriendly. Without the pilot truck it runs beautifully even on my 22 to 18 inch radius track. Its been in my mechanic's shop half a dozen times since I bought it; it now has the tsunami 2 decoder and current keeper but the pilot truck continues to be a problem. Not being mechanically talented I guess that there is no clearance between the frame and the truck and the pilot truck frame seems too low. Hope you don't have these problems. But if anyone can provide plans, diagrams or insights I too would love to see them.
I've got two of the S-1's. Never had a problem with the lead truck. Or any other. And that's on 22" radius. The supposed minimum. I don't recall trying mine on 18", so can't help ya there.
There IS a spring that pushes the lead truck down. And there's a washer in there, too.
And, yes, clearances might be tight.
If'n it was me, I'd put my snout down real close and check REAL WELL about how the tracking is. And dump the small radius ASAP.
My first brass engine was one of these. Gorgeous. I always wanted to "fix mine up". Maybe someday. As my realtor says: "There's good bones there."
Hi Ed: Yes, I'll be happy if I can get it to run smoothly just on the 22 inch loop. Based on what you say I'll check micromart for small light springs suitable for the pilot truck. Best wishes to you and let me know if I can be of any help. I'm delighted to find another S1 fan.
