Posting a pic of your model would be very helpful! If it is a Rivarossi (normally would say "Rivarossi" and "Made in Italy" on the bottom somewhere), it could be a model of a UP 900-class 4-8-4.
Ebay Canada has an engine 917 that the seller was saying was possibly an AHM engine, though it looks to me more like an IHC / Mehano 2-8-2 minus the lead and trailing wheels. Rivarossi steam engines were generally very well detailed, this one seems pretty basic. (IHC isn't the same as AHM/Rivarossi.)

Lacking a photo or some additional info, I have nothing to offer.

So, you bought this, no picture, no description? Just a ? 8 ?. but you know it had a red roof, and numbered 917 ?
I guess I don't understand that you don't know what you bought.

The engine in the pic is a USRA 2-8-2 with the leading and trailing trucks removed (or simply never installed). Bachmann did a similar thing when they added a trailing truck to a 2-8-0 and called it a 2-8-2. They also added trucks to a six-wheel switcher and called it a Prairie.

Just be glad you don't have to press "2" for English.

All I did was google "rivarossi #917" and found the above eBay auction.
If so, it's a 0-8-0 switcher...
