Yep' DRGW L-105, this is a model imported by Max Gray and erected by Katsumi of Japan in 1962. Upgraded with a Tsunami sound decoder last year.
still a excellent slow speed runner even after 55years.
ATSFGuy What type of steam locomotive is that? It looks like a large mallet of some sort. Also what is the wheel arrangement?

I looked it up in my handy, dandy Guide to North American Steam Locomotives (revised edition 2015 Kalmbach Books). The locomotive is a class L-105 simple articulated 4-6-6-4 "Challenger" type built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works and delivered to the D&RGW in 1938. The object behind the headlamp is referred to as a sandbox and after December 7th, 1941, the "rising sun" motif was replaced with ordinary "zebra stripes".
Interesting. Have not seen that before.
Any more info or prototype photos?
Some have said a sand box,but my belief is it was simply a structural palette for the sunburst and other designs meant for crossing safety.
the rising sun motiff was discontinued after the bombing of Pearl Harbor and our entry into WWII.
Burlington Steam lets try this! BINGO!
lets try this!

What is the large object just behind the headlamp (painted with the "rising sun" motif)?
Thanks, will give it a try tomorrow!!
