I use craft paints,with and/or without primer,with no issues.
But,,, I wash em all. I use Dawn, if that makes a difference
I'm going to vote for the usual recommendation of making sure the casting is washed and cleaned (to remove any surface oil and dirt), then primed (I guess now with the ubiquitious Rustoleum 2x Ultra - probably red oxide for brick chimneys, or may light grey if you plan to paint mortar color first then the bricks as described many places.). I use other primer colors as needed depending on the finish color. After that, pretty much any paint can be used, including craft paints and markers. I usually finish with a light dull-coating.I have castings painted like that over 2 decades ago that still have good finshes.
Hello all... For years I've been using styrene plastic chimney stacks for detailing my HO-scale buildings, but love some of the metal castings. However, I've noticed the enamel paints (Testor's little bottles) tend to "rub off" the metal casting chimneys easily when lightly handled long after I've painted them. What type or brand of paints should I use? Do I also need to apply a 'primer' as well? Please help - thanks.
