chutton01One thing I've read in a number of places is that the ends of banded lumber stacks by, say, the 1960s and later should be pretty even, like in this promotional image. Mechanical handling and all.The Chooch castings in the OP look close, but could use some sanding to be nice and even.
Generally yes, but not a hard and fast rule. I've definitely seen photo's from the 70's and 80's eith uneven lumber ends.

doctorwayneI originally found it by googling "nail art tape", but don't recall the site. You may have better luck at a beauty parlour or hairdresser.
Thanks. I'll try the beauty parlor route. As I mentioned previously I did try the Google/Ebay method. With one exception, it appeared to me that all one could buy was a 8 to 30 roll selection with mostly non-usable colors. The one place that did have single rolls listed showed out of stock on anything black.
riogrande5761Unwrapped lumber is a different thing, sort of the holy grail of loads, at least those who model later than the 1960's. The RS Laser Kits aren't too bad for a load although it appears to be 4x4 lumber or larger. I bought some accurately dimensioned lumber bunks from Blaine Hadfield of ExactRail - which I still need to assemble into a nice load for a 53' flat car.

@Wayne. Wrapped lumberloads are not too difficult to find - Jaeger has been offering kits for a long time, and many people are selling wrapped lumber loads on Ebay all the time. I've also seen printable sheets that let you "roll your own" wrapped loads. So thats not too much of a problem.

riogrande5761...Many of the lumber loads people have been showing with the lumber framing around them look like 40's and 50's type loads and are simply too early for many of us in the 2nd generation diesel era.....
You're right, as the loads I showed are for my late '30s era layout. However large dimensional timbers are likely still shipped in the same manner to industrial users. My loads were inspired by similar loads shipped to the steel plant where I worked. I don't know what its use might have been, but it was some of the nicest-looking lumber I've ever seen, and all in dimensions probably 12"x12" and larger. On all occasions, the cars were bulkhead flats, perhaps sixty-footers.For wrapped lumber loads, I recall seeing them done by printing the wrappers, then using them applied to blocks of balsa wood.I did a quick search and found the info HERE, although you'll need to scroll down a couple of posts. (There are places where the "Search" function works quite well. ).

maxman doctorwayne The banding was done with Nail Art tape... Where do you find this stuff? I Googled it, and it only appears to come in an assortment of 8 to 24 colors, most of which are not useful. Thanks

It's a shame Chooch no longer does those lumber loads - I bet they would sell like hotcakes if they could make them in quantity these days. They look ideal for 1960's, 70's and 80's + style unwrapped lumber loads.

I saw some HO RS Laser Kits at MBK a few months ago:
Here are the RS Laserkits lumber stacks I assembled from them - just the loads assembled so far but you get the idea:
Each kit comes with what amounts to 6 each of 8', 12' and 16' stacks, although it is labled as having 9 total, so maybe each stack is supposed to be two deep. What you see in the above photo's is two kit's worth. Below are the individual stacks from left to right, 12', 8' and 16' I think they look decent. Each kit was $12.79, so about $25 total for the unfinished load staged on the flat car in the photo's.

Hi,
I have attached a couple of pictures of lumber loads that I have no idea where I bought or who makes these loads.
Might any member here be able to direct me to the company that made these?
They are made of either plaster or hydrocal.
Thanks,

Chooch Enterprises Bundled Lumber Load fits 50' Flatcars #7218.
Here is what they look like inside of double door boxcars. I just used them on one side. The doors on the other side are always left closed.
hornblowerThey list several of the previously mentioned Model Railstuff wood load items as out of stock with no restock information available from the vendor, BUT THEY'RE ON SALE TODAY!!!!!
Often things are in stock when they go on sale, and the sale goes on for a month or two according to what I have seen in the sale flyer. When they are sold out Walthers program continues to show the sale until the scheduled end of the sale. It's like their program says the sale ends on "x" date, and the sale continues even if the item sells out in the first week or two of the sale.

hornblower I don't mean to hijack this thread, but how do we continue to put up with Walthers strange marketing approach? Or even more strange ... was looking for an item from Walthers and the Walthers website says it is not only out of stock but there is no information from the importer when it will be in stock. So Walthers can't even get Walthers to talk to it.

I don't know who might have made those lumber loads, but they look like they may be intended for use on a centrebeam flatcar. They appear to be already a suitable colour, but you'd need to paint the banding. There's an article in the February issue of RMC on adding the cabling to Walthers 72' car of that type, either with or without a load.
When I quit scratchbuilding in wood, I used some of the stock which I had left to build loads for open cars, like this Walthers 52'6" GSC flatcar...
...and this Athearn Blue Box 50' flat (lowered and with a new deck and Walthers bulkhead ends...
This one was built very recently, to fit the Westerfield car, shown. The banding was done with Nail Art tape...
draftingplansYes I noticed the same thing. Model Railstuff is on sale but...........no inventory. LOL

Where did you read they are on sale? The warehouse sale, in the grey box above these items is a seperate link to the warehouse sale.

It often seems like the few truly good deals they offer are for items they don't have and never really intended to sell. Are these deals just teasers designed to draw us in hoping we'll buy something else at full price? No wonder I prefer to shop elsewhere.

Thanks for the replys.
I emails Chooch and they made them about 20 yers ago and are not available. I will look into the links I received and see what I may want to use.
Again THANKS for the replys.

These aren't the same, but they're interesting. They're injection molded loads. http://owlmtmodels.com/

They look like the "Lumber Loads for 50' Flatcars" made by Chooch. These were limited run and out of production. I have never seen them out of the packaging.
.
These seem to be a bit hard to find. They show up on eBay occasionally.
