Last christmas was the first time i set up my Lionel three rail O guage under the christmas tree. We have two dogs, one was not interested in the least. The other was very interested and would follow the train and bark at it, UNTIL she stuck here wet nose too close to the track and got shocked and cried a little. Now whenever the train is turned on she leaves the room and peers from around the corner.

Our dog, Lola, a Jack Russell Terrior and Beagle mix, just tilts her head different ways when she hears the sounds on a video of trains. She sniffs all the train stuff then finds a toy to chew on or goes back to my wife. She does like to jump up to look on tables or counters so I'll have to be careful when I get the layout started.

The two greyhound 'sniffed' the trains, and since they did not seem edible - They could care less about them.

I knew a girl who liked model trains. She had a nice Parakeets.

When I was little We had a Parakeet who did like to ride around on my American flyer trains except when I put the smoke oil in the Steam loco. Had to take the Tunnel off the layout too.

Bonzo, my Olde English Bulldogge (aka The Independent Gravitational Mass) thankfully leaves things alone. Just comes into the train room and barks at me when I've spent too much time on the layout and not enough time with him. Used to run a cheap Christmas train 'round the tree but he ate that when he was a puppy.

Our dog, Cocoa, a Catahoula, loves to operate my trains.  She has already mastered the NCE Power Cab and accurately throws the turnouts using the toggles on several local panels.  She prefers running through freights and hasn't gotten into switching yet.

Our cat, Lickety, knows how to use the cat box.

Éliot is a 24 pounds Welsh Terrier, too small to reach my 52" high layout. When he was a puppy, my girl friend took him in her arms and showed him the layout. Since then, he insists to been taken in my arms when he hears the whistle of a locomogive and to have a look at the train.

We've had cats, but, at that time, no layout.  I've never much cared for cats, anyway.
We've also had dogs, but usually outdoor ones.  The ones that came indoors weren't allowed in the layout room.  I was never worried about damage to anything in the room, simply about dog hair, even though it's not anywhere near the problem as is cat hair.

Years ago I had a loop of Lionel under the tree on the floor.  Our then dog sniffed a little too close to the track and shorted the center rail and outside rail with his nose.  After that he stayed away from the trains.Laugh

Otherwise the dogs we have had, haven't been a problem.  But no more on the floor trains.

Our dog will occasionally get his head caught in the throttle cord as it hangs down off the train table. Usually, he's sleeping or chewing a rawhide bone under it....

My previous dog Tammy found an N scale covered hopper that fell off my layout. She chewed off one end of the car so it was beyond repair. It has become a wreck damage load on a flatcar. The dog I have now comes in and sleeps on the floor when i'm in there. No damage from her yet.

My mixed beagle doesn't like anything new in his world.  He tries (and succeeds) to bite the engines.

Our corgi Pixie, god rest her soul, was never happier than when she was laying at my feet as i ran trains in the growlery. I think she felt the peace and relaxation that came from it.

We got our toy poodle at 6 months old. He was never allowed in there, and when he saw me go in, he would try to follow. At that age, while trying to potty train him, he would do his 'business' in front of the door. We stopped that very quickly. Now, when I have friends over, he looks in, maybe ventures a foot in but when I give him the 'look', he bolts out! Like the other poster said, I don't want him trying to eat or step on something he shouldn't...

When we got Murray 5 years ago. I was scared laying out the track on carpet, but I did it anyway. He was frighten jumped on the couch while I was putting the track and trains on.

When the Rio Grande California Zephyr was running he ran off the couch and hid between the front door. Later on he slowly walked and sat next to the track. I told that he couldn't touch. Next thing I knew he's paw was the track and knocked over the DRGW F3 locomotive.

Charlie (14 months) on the other hand is way to crazy but I been extremely careful when they're out. He some how got a hold of 2 pieces of Kato unitrack but only one got chewed up.

My mixed Beagle doesn't bother my trains she just lays by my feet when I'm at my work desk the rest of the time she lays near a heating vent or in the sumer the A/C vent or curls up next to me if I'm watching a movie.

To avoid the appeance of bias If you ask about cats You have to ask about dogs.  My dog Orachino is not allowed in the train room without supervision.  i am afraid he might ingest something he should not.  He doesn't seem bothered by the trains except that noisy Lionel round the tree train.
