Take a ride on a Baldwin S-12. Went to SMS in New Jersey today for a visit with friends and do a little research. While I was there I got bigger tour of the line, saw more of the collection in storage and hung out on some revenue movements.

We went to a parade somwhere, I recall vaguely. It might have been in Weston, though. That was what we considered town. Toronto was the big city.

I don't remember looking at department store displays or Christmas parades. What I do remember is every year we would get the FAO Schwarz Christmas catalog filled with way cool toys, most of which my parents couldn't afford so it was just a wish book for us. The other vivid memory is every year one of the local TV channels would have a weekly Santa Claus program from the North Pole. One year I recognized that our plummer and family friend was the guy playing Santa Claus. I told my mother who immediately called his wife to confirm that. The funny thing is his own kids didn't recognize him.

A couple of months ago, LL Bean contracted with Boothbay Railway Village to design and build a layout for their 2016 Northern Lights Celebration.http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/512152?page=northern-lights
The layout has a Christmas and winter outdoor activity theme. It is 12'x28' with a double track G scale loop at grade and an O scale high line in the center. It was built by our volunteers in about 6 weeks!! it will be running in the Children's Department at LL Bean in Freeport, Me from Nov 15 to Dec 31.

That's for the kind comments. The GS is pretty low pressure. Show up with what's asked for and you're usually good. It's meant to convince you to take the next step in the AP, as well as recognizing a decent start on that effort. Not sure how rigorously I'll pursue things after the GS, but it does get you thinking about what's next.

Great start to the weekend!!!
I decided to change pace for a couple of days and get some track laid at Milo Mills on the SLO&W. There will be a siding here and a small frieght station that will be a scratch build based on the small freight house in Naples, NY. The turnout has been installed and the siding track has started to be put in place. Just waiting for the crew to arrive to finish it up... There will be room for two 40' cars at the siding.
Lots of wiring in progress as well. The Tortoise has been installed and wired, and there will be some other DCC power drops in the area as well. Some of the buildings will also be lighted so I brought the nearest DC power over to get that done.

This week didn't see as much RR action as I hoped. I have focused on getting ready for my Golden Spike presentation at our local divisional meeting here on Saturday. The NMRA set up the GS as a sort of introduction to its Achievement Prograam (AP). It's not everyone's bag, but it does help your modeling by helping you focus on improving it. Here are a few examples of my work that will be on display. First, one requirement is to display 8 square feet of basically completed and scenicked layout area. I chose the oldest part of the layout, Red Mountain, as it was a module I built prior to moving here. It's a little larger than required and will see more changes, but here it is; the small dayglo card marker designates each example as I'm doing this in part to encourage other members by showing how easy this is once you've got a few things under your belt.
The Haymarket Tram is one of the 5 required structures. They have to be something more than a simple assembly of a basic kit. In this case, I bashed together 3 Grandt Silverton Ore Bin kits (not visible as on the far side), built a crib out of Grandt Cribbing sections, filled it with crushed rock crumbles from the Animas Forks area, built the headhouse for the tramway, and built-up an QAnvil Mountain Models tramway to serve the mine above. Totally freelance, it's in the spririt of the San Juan mining tradition.
Diesels #64 and #100 are familiar to WPF readers. #64 is a brass PSC WP&Y DL-535 kit I built, detailed, and painted for the Rio Grande. The #100 is a narrowgauged Kato that I modified to suit my needs.
The west siding switch at Purgatory is one of the 3 examples of trackwork (which can be RTR) needed. This is from a BK wye swicth kit and is at a crucial location, where a bridge on a curve is also very close to the layout's edge. I've installed a few discrete bumper disguised as road edge markers and haven't loct any equipment to the 400+ scale foot dropoff yet -- knock on wood.
I hope to report that I "made the grade" in next week's WPF. Don't know how actively I'll then proceed with the AP, but we'll see about that after this first step.

First off Bear, thank you for the thread and the name is really touching to me. As usual, a lot of nice work this week. I spent my birthday photographing the section of the Wheeling and Lake Erie I plan to eventually model, and I was rewarded with a photo of their crane, and a coke train later on in the day.
The Wheeling is like a box of chocolates, you never know WHAT you're going to get. I think the sun worked with me in this shot- a nice thoughful "gift" the Wheeling "gave" me.
This week had me start and finish the first of two more Wheeling hoppers. Stripped the lettering and applied the decals from highball graphics. The result is shown below
