When people hear "herpes" they think of one particular kind, but according to Wikipedia, there are many different kinds of herpes viruses, nine of which infect humans, causing different diseases/symptoms depending on what kind you have and where (on the body) you have it. It's estimated that 90% of all humans have at least one form of it. In addition to the kind most people think of, these viruses are also responsible for chicken pox, cold sores, shingles, mononucleosis, and viral meningitis. Hundreds of other varieties infect dogs, pigs, horses, cows, birds, even reptiles and fish, but these are not transmissable to humans.

Mornin' Everyone!

Zoe, I'll have.....  What?  Fresh Donuts today?  Crispy Creme?  Not as good as Dunkin Donuts around here but they'll do. Whistling  Just bring over a new box of them and I'll see how many I can wolf down.  Will need a large pot of Marrakesh Express Dark Roast Coffee to wash them down too...........

"..... It's a rainy, rainy day, Just a rainy, rainy day..."  Yep, getting some much needed liquid sunshine today here in the Finger Lakes Region of NYS.  Got some heavy rain overnight and will continue with showers all day, tomorrow, the weekend, etc.  Of course we needed this weeks ago!  Should help the beans, peppers, and fall planting of peas in the garden.  High today of 63°F and the low tonight will be 53°F.  Guess I can leave the air conditioning off for the time being... Whistling

Not running the Air Conditioning will sure help the electric usage for October.  Reading has already gone in for September.  I used more electric from the grid this month than ever before in September and also produced more from the solar array than ever...  Go figure.  I am just 3 kWh short of a record for September from the solar.  Should make around 4.5 or so today and then whatever they kick out for me tomorrow.  Former record was 459kWh.  Should be around 465kWh or so this year.

Need to get a couple errands done after I get a quick shower.  Running late today....

Monitor Front Steve and others, the old one was dying. It would start out with a full screen then start shucking in on the sides in a hour glass shape. I do like the old one way better. I wonder if I could even get it fixed?

No you cannot. I have inquired about this. Nobody will work on it. Their time at $100/hr, plus two way shipping at $30.00 each way or there abouts and you will understand why this is so.

On the older flat monitors that were powered by flourscent lamps could easily be repaird, it was always a cappacitor or two that blew. Pry it open, and you will see which capacitors blew out (they will be swollen), you examine the cap to get its value, you desolder it from the board, and install the replacements.

Now all flat screens are much thinner, are LED lit and so far as I know, none of them have ever broken down.

It has been a busy & interesting week. Like life, some ups & some downs. But hey, I woke up this morning so things are on the right track.

Railfanning last weekend was really good. 16 trains on Saturday & 14 trains on Sunday. Only 1 heritage unit, the Monongahela, but some foreign power of UP & BNSF. Norfolk Southern contributed a couple of ET44AC & SD70ACUs. The SD70ACUs are the SD90MACs that have been reworked & repainted into NS colors.

Yesterday we went up to Horseshoe Curve, & I'm pleased to report that the entire curve is once again available for your viewing pleasure for the 1st time in many years. The trees & shrubs have been cut back & it's worth the trip. I understand that with Norfolk Southern's permission, the Railroaders Memorial Museum contracted with a private tree service to cut back the growth that was blocking the view. They did a nice job.

On the down side of things, last Thursday evening I got a pop-up on the computer stating that my anti-virus program wanted to do an update. This is a popular program that can be free, but I elected to subscribe to the full version a couple of years ago. Anyway, it updated & required a restart, which I did. After the restart, nothing, nothing at all. The home screen was there, but dead as a doornail. Played around & restarted a couple of times but always with the same result. So I booted in "safe mode" & did a "systems restore". Got the computer functioning, but no anti-virus protection as the previous edition was erased. So I called customer support on Monday afternoon. I can tell you that customer support isn't in this country & English is not the first language. Anyway, a young lady did this & that by using my computer remotely. Then she transferred me to a supervisor whose language skills were even worse, who informed me that they could indeed resolve all my problems and install my anti-virus program for aroung $49.99. What? I asked why I had tp pay for them to fix a problem that they caused. He informed me that I should be thankful because it was a special deal that would normally cost over a $100.00. That's when I lost it & told him what I thought of him, his company & described the place where the sun doesn't shine & how to put their product there. I'm still steamed. So right now I'm running without an anti-virus program until I select and order a new one.

On the way up to Hoeseshoe Curve yesterday, we were on a 6 lane parkway outside of Pittsburgh when I noticed a car up ahead in the center lane lurch quickly to the left & than recover. This happened a couple of more times & I decided to get around him. Thats when I saw it was a Uber driverless vehicle. I'm not impressed with it. Had anything like a semi been beside him, I'm not sure what would have happened. I don't understand the push for driverless systems. The only ones who I think will benefit from it are going to be lawyers.

I had to go down this morning & pick up my new eye glasses. Wow, what a difference. Strange thing though, when I had my examination, I had told the Doctor that my vision had deterorated over the year, but he said no, my vision had actually improved & that's why I needed new glasses. He did say he sees the beginnings of cataracts though. He could have omitted that & just let me feel good about the improved vision.

I was hoping to go to the train show in Berea, Ohio tomorrow, but thay are forcasting rain. My experience in the past is that the parking lot there turns into a swamp, so I'll probably forego the pleasure. It's too hard for the wife to walk in those conditions.

I'm going to wrap all this nonsense up now, because I have to go to the basement and unplug the drain of the stationary tubs. I hate plumbing because it never goes smooth for me. You know, try to fix a drip in a faucet & end up digging up the street to get to the main water line. I'm pretty sure I'm providing my plumber with a nice retirement nest egg.

Tom.  I believe I have had similar experiences with "customer service" people who are difficult to understand because of foreign accents. Also, I have had plumbing problems when things get worse as I try to make them better. ... sounds like some interesting rail fan experiences.

 Eveing Diners. Sigh

Flo, I will have a Beer and give Ed one if he make it in tonight.

Was a pretty good day till I started running the trains.

Got Dwights old graden broder cut up. Cut some more of my old fences cut up and hauld away. Used the what I thought was a POS electric Chain Saw my daughter made me buy. I used it twices before and I thought it was a waste of $43.00. Today it did very well? Maybe because the 4X4 post where rotten. But it got them cut up like that!

Picked up the plates for Sue new car and did some other running.

Train Front. Went to K-10 Model Trains and picked up another 12 pack of PK 2000 wheels and Kadee #27 couplers to get the rest of the B&O coal cars on the rails. Again I had to talk my self out of buying a new engine. Walthers F7A in War Bonnet paint with sound only $189.00.

K-10 all so has a Proto 2000 B&O DCC ready E-7A for $89.00. Now if they had a B unit I would have bought it this spring. Ed if you could use it let me know here at the dinner and I will pick it up for you. If you don't need it, well more than likely I pick it up. Whistling There is all so a Walthers B&O WWII Troop Sleeper car for $14.95 if you are intrested.

Nightmare on the Train Front Bang Head Started the layout running the B&O F7A's. They where acting like they had drity wheels, but I cleaned them last night? Cranked up the speed a little and seemed OK till I had a small derailment. Got that straighten out and started them up. Made it about 7 feet and stalled. Seems the B unit is being mean to me. A unit wanted to running but B just sat there. Could still be use dirty wheels, but seems more like shut down mode. Only thing I hate about QSI Decoders!

No Problem, I will break out the big gun! Yes Got the N&W Y6b lashed up to the 40 car coal train, only engine I have that could haul it by it self. Started her up, wheels went around 2 times and stopped moving! Bang Head All the sound still works but still just sits there.

Going to get a hammer and fix some stuff, Ken

Zandoz - Are you okay ? I feel your pain. Between my kids, job injuries I have spent way to much time in the hospital. Heck they know us by name in the ER !  Sigh Flo set Zandoz up with a case of DRP and put it on my tab I think he need something to lift his spirits

Thanks! I could use one of those DDPs right now.

Welllll...I don't want this to devolve into a 'Woe is me" thing, but to be honest I've not seen OK in over 10 years...but things have gotten worse physically and mentally the last 2 months.  I'm dealing with several very painful wounds that are not healing, and the treatment the doc wants to try next will be over $1200 per week just for the home supplies, on top of weekly hospital visits.  Unrelated, for the last 2 months I've been having severe energy and muscle loss with out of wack blood counts, INR and Iron levels.  So far the Doc has no clue why, and the tests are showing nothing.  Not know what is going on or what to expect is really getting to me. <shrug>.

Reality...an interesting concept with no successful applications, that should always be accompanied by a "Do not try this at home" warning.

Hundreds of years from now, it will not matter what my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove...But the world may be different because I did something so bafflingly crazy that my ruins become a tourist attraction.

"Oooh...ahhhh...that's how this all starts...but then there's running...and screaming..."

The symptoms still cry bad cap to me. I have had two monitors do something similar. Pulling it apart and looking for leaking or bulged power supply capacitors is always an option. You just have to do it yourself.

My thoughts are with those of you who are having medical problems. My back has been bothering me a lot recently, but all I have to do to stop me from whining is think about those who are worse off.

YGW: Believe me, I pop my share of pain pills. They do help but they won't solve the basic problem. I'm seeing a physiotherapist right now and we are having a devil of a time trying to figure out what exercises will make things better. So all we have managed to do is make things worse!Bang Head

I may have made a big mistake tonight! I went on to eBay and discovered a number of pieces of rolling stock that are potential bargains. I say 'potential' because I haven't won any of the auctions yet, but if I do I'm going to be out at least a couple hundred dollars! I have been avoiding eBay because I need to stop buying things and work on what I already have. However, the items I found are just too rare to let them pass by. And NO, I'm not going to tell you what I found because I don't want anybody else going after my bargains!DevilZip it! Selfish eh!?Smile, Wink & GrinLaughLaugh

OK, I'll tell you!

- Six 50' TOFC flat cars with 25' trailers including two newer Athearn models, one with the Canadian Pacific logo and the other with Canadian National. The others are BB but I like them. If I get them I'll have a train about 1/3rd as long as Sheldon's!!!

- An Athearn 40' reefer with the Carnation Milk logo. Big deal you say! However, this is one of the somewhat rarer ones that says "IRRADIATED"  instead of "EVAPORATED" above the Carnation Milk logo. Glow in the dark milk! I love it!!

- A plain old Athearn 40' Canadian Pacific 'Spans the World' boxcar. Also no big deal, but this one is 'Buy It Now' and it was about half the usual price. As a bonus the lettering is nice and clear unlike a lot of similar cars that Athearn sent to market with faded printing right out of the box.

Please don't tell my wife!!!!

Cheers everybody!

Dave

Good morning!

Don't talk to me about donuts.  I used to enjoy them.  I would have maybe one donut a month, when someone brought them to work for a meeting or as a sacrifice to us Lab Rats.  Then, along came the Trans Fat Police.  Dunkin's changed their formula, and suddenly I could no longer tell where the donut ended and the cardboard box began.  Now, I can honestly not remember the last time I had a donut.

Open your AV control panel from the AV icon and work on it from in there.

Typically, if you AV needs help the computer will generate a notice in the lower right hand corner. A pop-up is a no-no!

You need to get donuts from Bearscat. They are so light, airy, delicious, I have never had any that were better than these.

Its a DOG.... you need a CAT.

My main mission now is not to get another dog or animal in the house. Of course they make you happy but that's a small window.

Speaking of donuts. I usually buy them at the bakery instead of the big box companies. They basically taste the same.

Good Afternoon Diners,

Flo, might I have an extra large coffee with lots of cream, please.

Mmmmm, donuts!

There used to be a place in Manhattan, Kansas called Verns Donuts.  They supplied donuts to all of the convenience stores in the area.  They would make the donuts in the basement of a house, and people would stand at top of the stairs at around 2:00 am and order donuts that were hot and fresh from the fryers.  They were delicious.

For those of you who are boomers translate the scene as "late nite munchies" to get the full dynamic of the situation, but not exclusive to conscious altering substances.

This was back in the 70s.  I don't know if this place is still in business or not.  I haven't been there in almost 40 years.

Doesn't affect me anymore since I gave up eating wheat a few years ago.

Just thought I'd share.

Hello to everyone, and I hope everyone is ok and safe.

Less is more,...more or less!

First, I am now craving some Krispy Kreme donuts, thank you very much! We have a local donut bakery called Bosa Donuts that also makes great donuts.

I spent another couple of days in Dallas this week. Traveling to Dallas from Phoenix is not too bad. Both cities are Southwest Airlines hubs so there are a number of non-stop flights back and forth, and it is only a two-hour(+) flight. I am a huge fan of Southwest airlines and have been for many years. I fly enough with them to qualify for a "Companion Pass." This means any time I get on plane, Mrs. ROR can accompany me for free. This includes if I am using rewards points to fly, she still flys for free. She doesn't come with me on every trip, but it is always nice when she does.

As I mentioned before, I have been taking piano lessons again after a thirty-year hiatus. In four weeks I will again perform in my teacher's "studio recital." It is a bit of a hoot as almost all of her other students are not even old enough to drive. This will be my third studio recital, but the big one comes in December--a solo recital. I have no idea why I suggested the idea, but now I am committed. The recital will have about 50 minutes of music, all memorized. I am a bit terrified with the prospect.

On the train front, I have not been able to do much except have the trains run while I am working at my desk. I contacted the manufacturer of the skirting about the error in the sizes and they have reimbursed me for the cost of the seamstress to make the required modifications. I am a delighted customer. I still need to get the pieces to the seamstress to get them cut and sewn.

Good Afternoon,

A very pleasant sunny 70F here but it is only supposed to last another 3 days.

Garry,  Tim Hortons is a bit of an addiction for Canadians as we have 4400 locations for a population of 36 million. They do make good donuts. We have some in the freezer. Mind you they sell a lot of food such as wraps, bagels, etc. so it is more than just a donut and coffee shop.

Nice photo of the sailboat in your lake. I assume it is about a 22' boat but it is hard to tell from that picture. Do you know the make and size of it? Back when I was keenly involved with sailing I knew most make and models plus their pluses and minuses. I do miss it at times. I don't miss the hassle of haul out which occurred about this time each year. It was a very nerve wracking day. While we had a stationary crane, lifting a 3 ton boat in slings with a strong wind blowing and then swinging it around to lower on a trailer was often more excitement than I normally would like. It took a crew of at least 4 guys to do it, more if the wind was bad.

I lucked out yesterday. A popup ad came up on a local news site for Manitoba Opera who are doing my wife's all time favourite opera next spring. She has never seen it and had basically given up hope of ever doing so. It is Werther by Massenet. We were able to get good seats for 2 performances and were lucky as most good seats are sold out even though it isn't on until April 25 next year. So I earned a lot of brownie points for that one. We agreed it would be our Christmas present to each other since the tickets cost $120 each.

I had to order a new battery for this computer which turned out to be a battery that wasn't available locally and cost $112 on line. The computer is a Fujitsu laptop with a 17" screen. Not a common model.

Well time to fire up the grill. Salmon burgers are on the menu.

YGW I don't know her exact symptoms.  As Steve pointed out, there are multiple causes of meningitis/encephalitis.

Train front.  A month ago I sent a decoder back to NCE.  Had not heard a word and thought it got lost in the mail until yesterday when an email announced it had been shipped.

The best donut store in Annapolis is called Carlson's, but it is owned and run by Thai women for the 40 years I've been there.  I swear they do not age.  They look exactly the same.  They still have problems understanding that I want the chocolate cake, chocolate iced donuts.  It gets worked out.

3 days of rain washed a wasp/hornet nest out of the Japanese maple next to where I park my car.  I never saw it before and Jap maples don't get that big.  Hornet spray brought out about 15 of the black, with white spot insects, looked like giant flies.  Four of those, flew away unharmed, the rest could barely walk and quickly went to hornet heaven.  Sorry the only pic I took is out of focus, but it was kind of pretty.

Good evening, Diners!

I have about two hours before it's "lights-out" for the September Diner, at least in the Eastern US time zone.

Chloe, I just got my second pension check and I'm feeling a bit extravagant. How about a lobster surf and turf with a tender Filet-Mignon. A bottle of your finest Sam's Choice Chianti and a side of rice pilaf, please. And bring everyone else a round of whatever they're sipping.

I've been pretty busy since my last post and my photo of my work bench embarrased me a bit so I spent a good part of two days to sweep off most of that accumulation...

So I went from this:

To THIS!

Then I figured as long as I have all that nice open space I'd tackle a BIG project and that turned out to be building the last two out of the four Hulett ore unloaders that I started on EIGHT years ago!

There's the beer you bought me, Ken! Thanks!

As of 5 this morning I'm about 80% complete on Hulett #3 and ready to begin #4. Then I can concentrate on the ore boat and the harbor... Finally!

Howmus, thanks for replying to Garry about the renumbering of 765 > 767. Interesting story about the switcheroo the NKP pulled off. Just like when we modelers have to renumber engines!

YGW, the "Crew Support Car" you see in the photo is an ex-US Army Kitchen car. There were dozens of these built in the early 1950s. Many became Amtrak 1300 series baggage cars. They could have been bought very reasonably in the early 1970s when the Government was selling them off.

I hope you are all doing well and I offer my thoughts and prayers to all for a safe, healthy and happy October! Angel

Here comes Chloe with that wonderful meal Dinner

Regards to all,

Ed

I saw a couple of those Hulett unloaders at a train show, and I thought they were fascinating.  There's something about the interface between rails and water that I just love.

Hello all, wishing everyone a good upcoming weekend and good health.

I have two more days at work than I'm going to Orlando Florida with the family for a week and I'm rather excited about such a trip. Plus, always fun to get out of town for a bit. For rainy days, I'm taking a couple Red Caboose X29 kits, plus tools and glue of course, to pass the time.

One of my K4s is down for the time being. When I get back from the trip I'll look into getting the model fixed. I'd been thinking about swapping the Paragon2 decoder for a TCS-Wow, so it may be the time to get the process rolling. The problems with this K4 developed recently and showed themselves while trying to double-head two K4s to pull a 33-car mail and express train I've been building up for the last 10-months. During the sporadic times both K4s worked, I could really see a difference in how much more easily two locos handled the train over just one.

Though it will be a decrease in pulling power, I'm seriously thinking of swapping the drivers with traction tires for plain drivers. One of my K4s does not have them and it pulled a prototypical length train, without traction tires just fine.

In other hobby news, I built up a GHQ 3-bottom plow model. It took about 4-hours but the model went together fairly well overall.

 Evening Dinners

Flo, yes I know the dinner is closing but can Ed and I still have a beer please.

 Another mixed day.

Work Front Best day is some time with $2000.00 in sales. Not busy, just the right customers. Made aroud a extra $140.00 in spiffs. Yes

Bad I don't understand the state of Illinois! I am on track to make $3000 less this year than last year, so what do they do? Whistling They just cut are SNAP Beafits (food stamps) from $164.00 a month to $44.00? Boy that will hurt the budget.

Worst? Hum, my PCM Y6b is still DOA. Did a decoder reset by change CV 8 To 8 and the address changed. Still sits there and make all the noise it should excpet chuffs and will not move? Need to take the shell off and see if the drive shafts are slipping? If any HO engine has the right to die, it is this Y6b. Well over 1,000 hours of hard use!

See you all next month, Ken
