Just got in two 4 packs of Branchline Yardmaster cars in :-)

I can now put my postal scale, wheel weights and 6 yr old to useBig Smile

I also enjoy working on engines, at least the ones you can take part without fighting 100 different wires and too fine detail.

My favorite parts of the hobby are trying to make scense that appear as realistic as possible. I also like gluing people figures in for some reason and have a layout population of about fifty people, three dogs, several horses, two deer and a mountain lion all of which were carefully placed as they might appear in the real world. My absolute favorite thing to do however is to try out a new engine...

I'm not surprised that a lot of members quote actually building and finishing individual projects was the number one response, I am surprised by the number that did NOT respond with buying far too much "stuff' and hoarding boxes and boxes of unfinished kits that can never be completed in 3 lifetimes (and you know who you are, don't you)

No No No.  I am not a Hoarder, it just looks that way.

I am really a Collector.  Collectors don't build things, they just collect them.  It only looks like hoarding to the un-informed.

That's amazing! My favorite part of the hobby is pointing and laughing at people who complain about models that don't get produced and the price and quality of models that actually do make it to market.

It's really kind of hard to support your local hobby shop when the nearest hobby shop that's worth the name is a 150 mile roundtrip.

Mine is considered to collecting freight cars, coaches and locomotives. The other one is designing track plans.

When I have enough track and space. On a spare space is available I like running trains.

Athearn and Bev-Bel/Athearn.

Are they the same shade of green and i never knew Athearn did one or is it a different boxcar than Bev-Bel and living close to the GRN the boxcars were lighter green.

Russ,The two I have are dark green..The Athearn is a RTR former BB.

I'm still looking for several road names including the Bev-Bel/Athearn Aberdeen & Rockfish 50' ACF boxcar. I've been told by a Bev-Bel/Athearn  collector only 2,500 was made in a single run.. I have  the Walthers A&R waffle side boxcar that was released in kit  form years ago.

Up until now my favourite aspect has been scratch building both styrene or wood structures and HOn30 scale switchers using brass and donor N scale drive mechanisms.

That may be about to change though, because I will finally be able to start construction of my layout in the next few months thanks to my son buying his own home and getting his stuff out of my garage.

Dave

I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!

OPERATIONS.

Way back in the dawn of time, I read Bruce Chubb's article "Brakeman on the Yellow Extra."  Even at the tender young age of 16 or 17 this made me realize that operations was what I wanted to do more than anything.

54 years later it's still true.

Deciding what types of locomotives and cars to add my collection, whether it be a passenger or freight train.

I mostly like the Southwest with a little bit of the midwest, If I want a specific roadname, I'll buy a caboose with that exact name to represent it.

Running the trains is the most enjoyable.

But I like going to train shows, building the layout, building kits, scratchbuilding, collecting old MDC kits, etc.

My favorite thing is to run my trains. Nothing like seeing my favorite engines pulling freight or pulling a passenger consist. I run both super power steam and modern diesels.

Scenery would be next.

I don't have a layout of my own just yet, but have been doing a lot of research into what I'd like my layout to look like. I'll have access to five 2'x4' modules. I've been doing a lot of mind mapping and listing what I'd like to include on each module as well as how to create the module table/bench work.

I've really enjoyed going through what I have for locomotives and rolling stock to get an idea what I can include in a layout and what I need to get. I'll then look online at all the different items I'd love to purchase.

To to pass the time, I like watching YouTube videos of modern HO layouts. I also like reading the forums and layout specific websites/blogs to get inspiration for my own. Reading MR is another favorite when I have time.

Im thinking of using the old Minneapolis, Northfield, & Southern line between Lakeville and Northfield as inspiration for my proto freelance Erris & Spears layout. Looking at maps and reading up on the MNS has been a lot of fun. Also looking at antique items from that railroad and the old Chicago & Northwestern.

Finally, my favorite is thinking about how rewarding it'll be to finally begin my small, module layout. It'll be a lot of work and will take some time, but I'm excited about getting started.

For me, operation is my favorite part of the hobby.

After that, it's building scenery and structures.
