I would guess this pole has been posted many times previously. However, in the year I've been closely watching this forum, I don't recall seeing this question asked. So, let's get a good look at the statistical information on our ages. This does have a bearing on the health of this hobby. If we're all as old (or older) than Methusala, the hobby ain't long for this world. If indeed as I hope, there are plenty of youts out there than the future looks bright! However, you youts (as my cousin Vinnie would say) need to stop buying this RTR stuff, as it is unacceptable to me!

Most of your categories are for 10 year or more spreads. But the 50-60 bracket gets 3 separate categories, why?? Why did 54 get its own category? For a minute I thought it might have been your age, but since there are no votes for 54 yet I guess that isn't it.

Wow, I should of asked if it's O.K. to vote in your own pole. Awe, heck I just went ahead and did it anyway. FThunder11, I will have to remove your vote as you made a wrong statement about RTR stuff! Sorry, it's my pole!

You know, I would be O.K. with RTR stuff if it wasn't RTR. Or, if it wasn't glued together, so it could be taken apart! I have to replace couplers with Kadee #5s and replace wheel sets with metal wheels. My cars need to be weathered and detailed and I just find it better, if they're not built!

I'd love to build kits,but at my age it's a matter of time.There are so many aspects to this hobby that it's hard to get to them all.Heck,I don't even buy un-ripend fruit anymore

I think that's a pretty fair assessment of the older age group. There a few 70+ here that I am aware of, but they are quite under-represented online, compared to the hobby's demographic. We actually have quite a few teens here, which is encouraging.[:)]

Ed, There is now at least one vote for 54 now and yes, it's me! When you design the poll, you have control over what the poll says. I wanted to know to the year whom is older and younger than I. Hence the magnification of the 50 year olds. I could have done the same with asking whom is uglier than I, however,I didn't think people would be quite as truthful!

I'm 68 but n ot worried very much at the future of MR. My eldest son has not yet built his own layout but is already planning his son's layout who fot the time being is happy with Thomas and his friends. Looking at the age spread at swap meets the majority of visitors is in the age group 40-60+ but at MR exhibitions with a lot of layouts the picture is quite different, there you'll see a lot of younger dad's with their children so that's why I'm not particularly worried about the future prospects.

57 here. RTR is my salvation. I love the kits and have even done some scratchbuilding, but limited time means RTR, flextrack, etc wherever possible. I always have a kit or two going just because I like them, but I don't have the time to do the whole layout that way.

Now when I retire in a few years I 'll have the time to build all those kits I keep buying.

I'm 14. I like RTR, but I prefer kits. I buy RTR Locomotives, and track. But Structures and rolling stock are mainly kit (unless I can get an RTR item for a good deal).

Be careful, those were the words of my now divorced wife. It was her idea, I guess she thought she had nothing to lose. My life has been a bit of a struggle since, but I'm getting used to it. Her life has been something of a mess from what I can tell. The kids are the ones who have to really deal with it, and that's not fair. Mine are still adjusting.

same here. everytime I go to the hobby shop its filled with old people-no offense[:o)] that are always buying 1000's of dollars worth of Lionel stuff. btw I built a bowser caboose yesterday, very easy

54 at least for another 31 days. I like RTR and a do buy kits, it depends what is offereed and the price. Time is also an issue, I would rather spend time working on my layout then building kits.
