The last one to go!!

I have seen post from members who have a LOT of engines. As i am new to the hobby, i only have a few engines, and sometimes i sell one to aquire a new one. It got me to thinking, if i were to sell off my collection little by little, which one would be the last to go? And why? Has anyone else had this thought cross their mind? Just wondering if it was only me.........

Selling my trains? Any of my Trains. Even if it is for a railroad from the otherside of the continent and is for an era 20 years past than what I model? Thats to painful to even consider.

I guess what i am trying to say is is there one engine among your entire collection that holds the most meaning? My E4 was a very personal gift, so i guess that one qualifies for me.

Well the first thing I would like to say is, "have the disipline not to get into this situation to begin with."

It hurts to sell any locomotive (even the old junky AHM FM C-liners) but I think I would go one of three routes.
1. Keep the best running most general purpose locomotive to use on whatever layout is left - probably the Atlas GP7 (Kato drive) in CB&Q black or Proto Heritage 0-6-0 Santa Fe.
2. Keep the first serious locomotive in the collection AHM V&T 4-4-0 "Reno". Got it in 3rd grade. It has real brass trim. Cost a whopping $18 (equivalent of $310 in today's dollars).
3. Keep the showpiece. W&R Northern Pacific Z6 4-6-6-4.

Selling my locos would mean I'm quitting the hobby,so then it wouldn't matter which one goes first or last.However,until then,I might trade or sell one or more of my locos,but only to obtain a much preferred one.On my protection list:my Challenger,Mallet,Mikado,Berkshire,Decapod,Hudson and all my Kato SD's.

I sold off all my brass when the very good plastic prototypical steamers became available. Except for my Class J and my K2a streamlined. The J was my first locomotive, actually got me into the hobby 20 years after my father died, he was a model RR'er, and she still runs like a watch and looks beautiful doing it with a custom paint job, and no one makes the K, and I don't think it's too likely they will, but I never thought they'd make a VGN BA either..

My locos are my friends. I chose them all very carefully. I would have real trouble selling them.

They're like my books. I have more than 5,000 books. Have given away many. Have never sold one of them. [:D]

I'll give them up when they pry them from my cold dead hands. After a 35+ year absence, I've been pretty careful about what I get this time around.

I have them in three scales. Even though I have settled on S, I'm not eager to let the other scales go. My secret hobby is collecting unassembled kits.[:D][:D] I have unassemble locomotive kits in HO, O, and S. Maybe when I retire...

Honestly don't think I could get rid of any of them. Actually, even though I've got a fairly large roster, I manage to run just about all of them at one time or another. Some years back, I got rid of a couple of older brass engines through consignment. A Timken Four Aces and an early Santa Fe 2-10-2. I'm still kicking myself.
