Models for 2005
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, November 29, 2004 9:24 PM
What do you think the manufacturers should make in 2005?

I think:

HO
Timken's 4 Aces (BLI)
UP 3 unit Gas Turbine (Atlas, Athearn, or BLI)
UP 4-12-2 9000 (BLI or Spectrum)
USRA 4-6-2 (BLI or Spectrum)
FP45 (Athearn Genesis, Kato or BLI)
Virginian 2-10-10-2 (BLI)
WM 4-6-6-4 (Spectrum)
DM&IR 2-8-8-4 (BLI)
NP Yellowstone 2-8-8-4 (BLI)
Milwuakee Road 4-8-4 (BLI or Spectrum)
Grand Trunk Western U series 4-8-4 (BLI)
A reasonably priced, good running UP Big Boy (BLI, P2K, Genesis)
NYC 4-8-2 Mohawk (BLI)
CNW Streamlined 4-6-4 (BLI or P2K)
C&O J3a 4-8-4 (BLI)

Nothing. I can't keep up with what they are doing now. So they should just redo what they did the last few years painted with new numbers.

I used to spend more on model railroading, but now since I can't afford everything I get into quandries between two or three products and don't end up buying any of them. Lets see, do I want a Broadway Limited set of GN E8s original paint, or a 2-8-2. Couldn't decide so I haven't purchased either. If they would have come out with only one, I would have it.

Bigboy: Add a Rio Grande L-105 4-6-6-4 from BLI to that very cool list of yours, and we'll ALL be happy campers!

My guess is the QSI equipped P2K steamers will rival anything out there, IF they do their homework on the tenders. Heaven knows the straight DC versions are fine machines.

Lifelike heritage locomotive detail is far superior than, BLI ,& it's got the same sound system as BLI.

If BLI wants to crawl into my pocket, I'd consider the following:

Great Northern O-8 2-8-2 mikado
Northern Pacific W-3 2-8-2 mikado
Great Northern N-3 2-8-8-0
Great Northern R-1 or R-2 2-8-8-2
Northern Pacific Z-5 Yellowstone
Northern Pacific Z-6, 7 and 8 Challengers
Northern Pacific W-5 2-8-2 mikado

Fini***hat list, and then we can go on from there [:)]

If they want to make some very happy customers they should consider building UK prototypes, diesels in classes 40, 47, 50, 56 and an electric 87, and a some steamers like the 6233 and 71000 would all sell the pants off anything over here,
BLI bring it on down

I requested the Baldwin Shark at Trainfest. I'd like to see the B&O President class Pacific's, A B&O 2-10-2, and the Cincinnatian (price would b e a factor of course on all of these.)

I did a little research today in my case really want a 2-8-8-2 allready have the class A if the class a was heading south and the 2-8-8-2 was heading north and, passed each other, would I be able to tell the difference in the engines by the sounds they produced. Not talking about the whistle but mainly the chuff.Everything that I could find out was no, same sound system= same train.I would think that a 2-8-8-2 in real life would be different in the sounds it made compared to a 2-6-6-4.I never heard either in real life so I am only guessing untill I can research this more.I still want the P2k engine but might wait till soundtraxx releases its new line of sound to see how it stacks up against Bli.I know the original release of this engine by life like is one fine steamer.

I'd settle just for the models BLI has already announced! I'm not happy that the ATSF 2-10-2's got pushed back again...I'm beginning to think I'll be lucky to get them by 2005

It would be nice if BLI made a Reading T1 (HO of course). I'd also love to see Conrail SD70's in N scale.

A MP15AC from either Kato, Atlas, or Genesis, in the last half of the year so I can get it before it sells out.

well, the strong rumor is that we will be seeing the MP15AC and the MP15DC in HO from different manufacturers that start with the letter A.

I also think we will see a late phase GP40 from Atlas
a GP40-2 from LL P2K
a SD39 from someone
U18B from P2K
UP 3 unit turbine from Athearn genesis or P2K
a quality SD40T-2 in HO from Intermountain
C420 from Atlas or Stewart
T6 switcher from stewart or P2K

as for steam, i am happy with the C&EI 2-10-2's that are supposedly coming from Life Like. other than that, i have no idea what is coming.

You said a mouthfull, allthough my perefrences allways lean more towards steam,I have been waiting for their release of the sw series of switchers.I think
Bli made a big mistake pushing back their release in favor of higher priced steam units. Also their release of the Alco rsd15 ,I would buy one no matter ,but the fact that being an Alco unit it will sound different than say their the rest of their emd diesels,is without a dought the most attractive feature for me.I would like to see in the comming year specific sound for each type of engine, not just the same sound system covered by a different shell.Bli's sound bite for the sw sounds to me just like the one for their E's except for the horn.

A 2-8-8-2 compound and a 2-6-6-4 simple OUGHT to sound quite different. The compound will only have four exhaust strokes per revolution, wheras the simple should have eight. The compound would also sound slightly softer, at least that's the way I remember them. In simple mode, the 2-8-8-2 would have 4 sharp and 4 softer chuffs per revolution. Of course, a lot of the hard vs. soft differences may be evened out somewhat depending on the smokebox and interior exhaust layout. You need to listen to some of O. Winston Link's recordings. Very good stuff.
Oh, and over time the simple engines 8 chuffs should drift to 4 chuffs, and then back to 8 and so on, because they did run slightly out of phase. The BLI Class A does this beautifully.
What could have happened.... did.

And an SD60M in BN & BNSF Paint!
