Weekend Photo Fun 2/5- 2/7
Posted by Jimmy_Braum on Thursday, February 4, 2016 7:11 PM

Well, it;s the weekend again and here's what Im currently working on

The remains of a GP9 with the nose chopped off- actual prototype exists in the midwest somewhere for AMD inc

It will be painted into my own freelanced road eventually, but that nose is entirely styrene.

Let's see some good stuff guys.

(My Model Railroad, My Rules)

These are the opinions of an under 35 , from the east end of, and modeling, the same section of the Wheeling and Lake Erie railway.  As well as a freelanced road (Austinville and Dynamite City railroad).

Wow, an early start for the good stuff.

Riding the Wonder Horse in front of the IGA on Commercial St., Portland, ME from the Boothaby Railway Village layout. I just added the figures to the scene.

Gidday Jimmy thanks for getting us off to a good start, though I’ll have to teach you the proper way to write the date. Whistling Wink I presume this is the prototype of your new interesting project.
Thank you for teaching me something new.

It’s actually another three day weekend here which as things stand I will not be able to take advantage of. Sigh  So once again I’m relying on others really Good Stuff like Motleys new purchase to get my model railroading fix.
As a piece of entirely useless information George, IGA was a reasonably popular brand of grocery stores here until they faded out in the early 70s.
Anyhow another one from the 9mm (1:34) archives, a 1420 hp NZR Da class locomotive (EMD G12).

BTW apologies for the late reply Mike, having  looked at some contemporary photos I’m fairly certain that the “track magnets” are actually covers for the “points mechanism”.
Have a Great One ffolkes,

Cheers, the Bear. Smile

Good morning everyone, thanks for opening up Jimmy!

Motley, like the Powhattan Arrow, I have the cars and a brass J to paint in the future, like many of my other projects.

George and Bear, I remember the IGA's when I lived in Catasaqua, PA.  Used to go there all the time, have not seen one in a long time.

I got nothing done this week, as I have been fighting off a cold, so just sitting and reading most of the time.

I have some pictures I took in the past at the club!

Athearn Bi-Centennial EL SDP45, I like the Bi-Centennial engines and now have two with a third on order.  Hopefully I will paint a proper GTW one as the Athearn one is a complete Foobie.

PC Kato SD40 & SD45 on a mixed freight. It was common practice on the PC and later on Conrail to pair an SD40 and SD45 as motive power and for helper service.

Thanks for looking!

Jimmy ... Thanks for starting thise weeks thread. Looks like a fun kit bash.

Michael / Motley ...... That is a good looking N&W train.

George ..... I like your supermarket. There still are a few IGA's in this area.

Bear ... Interesting NZ locomotive.

Rick ... I like the big SD's in your photos. If you do a model of GTW 1776, I would love to see it.

Below are EMD units hauling a regional GN passenger train. GN occasionaly operated E7's with F-units or GP7's ... In this case, it is E7A-F7B-F7A followed by express cars. The rest of the train out of view. .... The Switcher is a CB&Q SW1000.

It's that magical time again...

Jimmy - Someone hit that loco with an ugly stick. Any links to a pic of the prototype?

Michael - Looks like someone took a wrong turn at Chicago, but that's a fine looking train.

George - IGA is very familiar in this household. I spent a couple of decades helping supply IGAs. Too bad the big boxes have put the hurt on them. Been thinking about getting one of those WS versions myself.

Bear - The Da looks a lot like the Australian Class 48 Alcos. Do I detect a dynamic brake in the short hood?

Rick - Always fond of seeing PC.

Garry - The GN looks classy.

After spending some time railfanning it this week, I'll be doing an update to my Cascade Extension thread with lots more pics over the next couple of days as I find time. http://cs.trains.com/mrr/f/88/t/219241.aspx?page=5

Jimmy, thanks for starting off WPF.

Motley, I like the Arrow. We have a Bachmann J w/Soundtraxx decoder that gets an occasional run on the BRVRR.

George, Good looking market scene. We still have a few IGA stores her in Northeast Ohio.

Bear, another unusual loco. Keep them coming.

Rick, love the PC SDs.

Garry. I like the GN train. The NYC did similar things before the bankruptcy when operable power was in short supply.

Mike, some great shots of your RR as usual.

From a recent 'run the trains' session with my grandsons:

NYC GP #5809 approaches the Black River Station with a NYC PAX passenger local.

NYC F7 #1821 at the head of a mixed freight consist passes Black River Station as a local passenger train loads its passengers.

Keep the photos and ideas coming guys. Thanks to you WPF is always the best thread of the week.

Oh my, it really is that ugly. They should put a paper bag over that thing when it's visible to the public. Somehow, I'm not at all surprised ADM was the daddy, 'nuff said.

Looks like THEE thread is off to a great start again this weekend!  Thanks for sharing, and for sharing such great work...

I have actually found some time to get back to work on the Girder Bridge Project on the SLOW.  Last time I was in the area looked like this:

After a few more hours of work it looked like this:

And today I did some earth painting and ballasting on the upper track and the far side of the track going under the bridge:

Keep the good stuff coming!

Hi Alan:

First of all, I see a bunch of different coloured wires connected to each other. IMHO that is a recipe for confusion. I would suggest that you get yourself a supply of coloured decoder wire and use the right colours in the appropriate places.

I also suggest that you convert to using LEDs for your lighting. Bulbs will burn out. LEDs will last a lifetime if properly wired.

As for your mistake, I think I see a black (left rail power supply) connected to a red wire (right rail power pick-up) on the decoder. With all due respect, the rest of the wiring is a bit confusing too.

Ultimately it doesn't really matter what colours you use as long as it works, but I defy you to take that locomotive apart in five years and understand what you did.Smile, Wink & Grin

You're right Dave,

I should have kept the colours the same, but I used the existing wiring. It will only take me 5 minutes to forget what I've done, can't imaging what it will be like in 5 years.  But I did put in warm white LEDS, quite a job getting the one in the cab to fit and all the wires hidden.

The mistake was, I melted the heat shrink tubing onto the 1K resistor when I soldered the wire onto the resistor. I couldn't slide the heat shrink where I wanted it to go (covering the resistor and the solder joins. I had to slit the heat shrint tubing to get it over the resistor. It ended up well. I like the glow of the headlights now. They didn't light up well on DC as I only run slowly.

Jimmy, Thanks for kicking off the WPF.  Interesting loco, especially with the cab picture window.  Wonder why the prototype's nose job, improved visibilty while switching?

George Hermach's camera tips article in the Feb. issue of MRR prompted my finally taking the ol' point and shoot digital off automatic for some photo fun exploration.

Thanks to all and regards, Peter

Thanks! Had to dig back to remind myself what exactly I was asking about. Is that a Peco thing or someone else's?

Got a bit more done today between several other items on the agenda...  This was yesterday:

Tonight:

I am about half way done with this little spot of scenery.  Need to wait until the glues dries, then clean up a bit.  It will then get some bushes, more grass, and probably a couple small trees...  Here it is from a different angle:

I also got the stone wall on the front side in place and started to build the hillside to it.

Wow! What a great collection of modeling and great photos this week! Thanks for getting it in gear, Jimmy.

Today my first ever order arrived from Shapeways. I discovered a fellow has designed a series of PRR catenary towers and I was just itching to see what these were about. I'll let the photos do the talking—

Here's a four track and a two track K braced 2 phase tower.

Another view...

Anyone see anything anachronous in the above photo?

Heres an E-33 under invisible wire (Bluetooth?) but the towers are just freestanding, resting on the scenery base!

This is what they look like right out of the shipping box. I had seen additive prototype rapid modeling many years ago and now I'm amazed that it is available, at a reasonable cost, for us modelers to enjoy!

Regards, Ed

It's a bit late, but I wanted to share some progress on the HOn30 covered bridge. The bridge truss is complete and the HOn30 track is installed. Still need to complete roof trusses, red siding, and roof. Almost done at last!
