I have 3 Kato F40PH's but food for thought is they were producted with a similar, but modified, electrical pickup system of similar design as the much ballyhooed Kato SD40-2. That said, I have heard it has been reliable thus far.
As for Rapdio, my confidence is high based on their product reputation so for, which as been high quality and excellent customer service. The Canadian Via F40PH was GORGEOUS. These Amtrak F40PH's look equally gorgeous so far.

Brakie,Oddly enough, the major problem with the Kato F40PH is that the drawbar performance is disappointing for a Kato and that it won't run at 79mph, let alone 110mph that the real ones could do. I think the max speed was something like 60 to 70mph on DCC. Not nearly fast enough for a passenger engine.

If I needed a F40PH I would more then likely go with the brand I know Kato due to the smooth drive-not saying there is anything wrong with Rapido's drive.
I'm just funny about buying locomotive with drives I know nothing or very little about.
YMMV.

I only need one Phase I but I need a couple of Phase II's I was about to get another Kato when Rapido announced theirs so I have been holding off. I am anxious to get the Phase 1 to see if its as awesome as it looks in the video on the Rapido website.

For me, the phase ll and phase lll were the regular Amtrak California Zephyer power but I have seen the odd photo of a phase l F40PH leading it. I have no doubt the Rapido will be the superior model for sure. If money was no object I'd buy one and hope for a phase ll and lll down the road.
I believe the Kato nose is wrong.
I do certainly hope that Rapido is going to run the phase list. I'm in need of a phase II.
I may or may not sell my Kato. I'll wait 'til my Rapido shows up and decide then. Or maybe it'll be someone's Christmas gift.

Now that the the Rapido f40ph is out what is the shape difference between the two?
I know the Kato is a Phase II but I think I remember reading there might be shape issues with it. However I have looked at pictures on Rapido's and Kato's website until my eyes have bled and I don't see any difference in shape.
I have ordered a Phase I from Rapido but I have a feeling that they are going to do all the phases and I am wondering if I should sell the Kato. It has sound but no flashing beacons or the great detail of the Rapido.
Any thoughts.
Thanks
