I had six Athearn PA-1s and four PB-1s early on but they have dwindled.  I kitbashed three PA-1s, two of which are now have Rivarossi Krauss Maffei ML4000 shells.  The other one is a dummy with a video camera.
 
The Athearn PA & PB frames and drive systems are bullet proof and easy to kitbash.
 
The Espee site is my online Model Railroad Bible!  According to the Espee the SP had a thing of Alco locomotives and not so much for EMD.
 
Right now I have two Proto 2000 PA-1s and two pairs of Athearn PA-1s & PB-1s to go with my mix of EMD E7s.  I have one 9 car passenger Daylight and I’m currently working on a second.
 
I’m a SP nut from the 1950s and the only thing I have out of era diesel wise is the pair of Krauss Maffei ML4000s, my steam count varies from the early 1900s to the last of the SP steam era.
 
I spent my youth (early 50s) climbing all over steam & diesel locomotives in the El Paso Texas SP Yard and it stuck.

The majority of my E's are older run LL P2K units. I was going to sell my Model Power E7's but had a change of heart after Doc Wayne posted photos of his reworked and nicely detailed Model Power units on the forum. Easy to mistake them for brass models.

According to this site, SP had (by my count) over 60 boiler equipped SD9's.  http://espee.railfan.net/spsd09.html

It's really kind of hard to support your local hobby shop when the nearest hobby shop that's worth the name is a 150 mile roundtrip.

When I got the E7 bug about 8 years ago I started out with five A/B pairs of Proto 2000 E7,8 & 9s but they gave me fits derailing.  My original passenger diesels were Proto PAs/PBs and they run very good.  I’ve never had a problem with the Proto PAs or SD-9s but I finally got rid of all of my Proto E series.  I went to Athearn SD40-2 frames with Cary E7 bodies, at 2½ pounds each they will pull the paint off the walls.
 
I accidently ended up with a Model Power E7 along the way, the motor bearings were bad so I installed a Canon EN22D can motor and it hooked me on the Model Power.  I have six Model Power E7As as well as E7bs, Model Power didn’t make a E7B so I kitbashed three from E7A shells.  I went with automotive Axle Grease in the Model Power universals and that reduces the Model Power growl.  Replacing the Model Power drivelines with NWSL drivelines also does away with the growl.
 
Two pair have Canon EN22D motors and the other two have the original Model Power motor.  I have two pair restored/kitbashed with the original motor and three more “A”s that I bought for part that I restored.  I ended up with a half dozen cracked gears, I think that’s why I was able to pick them up so cheap off eBay, they clunk pretty bad with a cracked gear.

Good going Mel.

I still have two Model Power E7 "growlers" and they are tough pullers. Are you repainting your unit back into Santa Fe, or another road name?

 

I’m a diehard SP guy so it’s on the way to the SP paint shop to become a SP Coastal Daylight E7.  I’m not sure at this point if it will ever see service.  I’ve purchased three E7s for parts in the last couple of months but the restoral in me sends them to the shops.  I think I enjoy restoring old clunkers more than running my trains.
 
I have a sack full of E7s even though the SP only owned five “A”s.  They bought 10 E7B, one E8A and nine E9As.  I’ve got eight operational powered E7As, one E7A dummy with a video camera and ten operational E7Bs.  I use a E7B dummy as a battery power supply for my Daylight passenger cars.

Well I received my package from NWSL on Christmas Eve, nice Christmas Present . . . . NOT! 
 
I ordered the Model Power gears with the part number 2301-6, I assumed that I would be getting 6 gears but it’s one to a package for $9.95.  That is too pricy for Mel!  Last week I bid on and got a clunker Model Power E7 for $9.60 including S&H off eBay.  I also received the clunker on Christmas Eve but a much better deal.  It had 5 good gears one cracked gear, a broken pilot and a crack in the shell.  A quick stop at my Model Power leftovers bin, about an hour of TLC and it’s usable and ready for the paint shop.
 

 
At $9.95 per gear from NWSL an eBay clunker is a much better way to go.  For $9.60 I got 5 good gears, two very good trucks, two good McHenry couplers, another spare Model Power motor, a Model Power frame and a fairly descent looking shell that will clean up nicely.
 
 
By the way the NWSL gear 2301-6 is the correct gear for the Model Power E7.

That was what confused me on the NWSL site, they don’t say which gear fits which locomotive.  There is also two different thicknesses of the 10T gears for the Model Power. ????  I ordered the narrow gear.
 
With Christmas time shipping they will probably be slow getting here, I’ll do an update when I get the gears.

The model power sharks (ho) had two different gear ratios. One version came with flywheels and the other Andre has shown which does not.

The 11T black gears I have are out of a Sharknose, I think that Roco had several different axle/gear sets in the HO series.  I friend of mine runs O gauge, he has several different Roco locomotives and the gearing is the same in all of them.

Does anyone have an exploded diagram of a Model Power E7.  I haven’t been able to find any printed information on an E7.  I’m looking for the part number of the E7 axle to see what other Model Power locomotives might use the same axle gear.  HO Seek has exploded diagrams on everything but the E7.
 
The E7 has an orange 10T gear and I ran across some like looking axles with a black 11T gear, it’s outside diameter is larger than the orange gear.  The black gear measures .3105” diameter and the orange gear .2765”.

It might have a similar gear set up to the Sharknose. Check this thread out, part #'s and everything.

I’ve looked at the NWSL site many times and the Roco/Model Power info isn’t easy to figure out.  I took a shot in the dark this morning and ordered a gear set (2301-6) to see if they’ll fit my axles.
 
I remotored several E7s with Canon EN22D motors and changed the drive shafts to NWSL and they run great.  The NWSL drive lines get rid of the Model Power growl even using the Model Power motors.
 
I kitbashed four E7As to E7Bs and run them in pairs, that combination will pull the paint off the walls with either the original motor or the Canon EN22Ds.
