Now you're making ME nostalgic. I had a Tyco Chessie Alco also as a young'n. Honestly those train set Tycos just are not long haul locos. Even if you score a like new one, it won't last very long. The suggestion above to put an Athearn or Atlas drive in it is good if you want it to last a while. Just be sure that if it's Athearn it has a gold colored motor and brass flywheels.
I see you're new here. Welcome aboard. There's no end to the helpful suggestions and experience here. Dan
If i am correct it has the pancake motor in it. I can not remember the set up of it but in general where the shaft exits the casing there should be a bronze bearing. That is where i will put a drop of oil. Run it and put another drop. Not too much as you dont want it seeping into the motor itself. I doubt though it will cure a grinding problem.
alco's forever!!!!! Majoring in HO scale Minorig in O scale:)
Tried to upload individual pics from photobucket of the build. Photobucket has changed and made it way more complicated than it used to be and flipping between two pages of web kept erasing this pages text so here is the whole build hopefully the link works

all locomotives and rolling stock ad compatableible as king as they have the same couplers. if our are going to get a different locomotive, make sure it has the hook horn couplers on it if you want to use your old rolling stock. Or you could convert your rolling stock to newer knuckle couplers.

just on ebay. There is a chessie super 630 for sale with all railings. Did not check to see if it was in working order though. Upon searching I believe I used the sd-40 frame and cut away some of the fuel tank to attach the tyco fuel tank to it so at least that looked close.
Mantua to Tyco back to Mantua many engines identical and many parts the same or substituable rom 1940's onward.

If I can't fix it, I can fix it so it can't be fixed
It is not made anymore. If you want to keep the shell find an older blue box athearn uboat or something similar for the frame and motor. After a little finessing of the frame you can get the tyco shell to fit. As far as using the rolling stock you will either have to change couplers on the athearn frame tomfit the old style couplers on the rolling stock or change out the couplers on the rolling stock
inhave done the conversion of the tyco shell on athearn but do not recall the frame i used it is not prototypical by any means but it will get you back in business
So, I'm feeling nostalgic since I came across my childhood train. It is a Tyco HO scale, but the locomotive doesn't work very well. I tried searching Ebay for a replacement, but it's tough to find another Tyco. So, I was wondering if I could perhaps purchase another brand locomotive (Athearn, Atlas, Bachmann, etc) but still use my old rolling stock, etc? Ideally, I'd like to find another Chessie System Alco Super 630 Diesel, but not sure if anyone makes that particular one anymore.
