Well, lucky for you all that you model HO. I model N scale and would love to get my hands on a bunch of Dash-9s. However, I missed the last time Kato and Atlas did a run on them. Lately though, I have been fortunate enough to be able to purchase a wide variety of NS equipment from Atlas. Though, NS has about 600 dash 9s on their roster, I still have none! Id be happy with even a bunch of undec models, heck, I can paint and decal them. Oh well. Life goes on!

You know, Athearn makes an outstanding line of diesels. I have seen the C44-9's in 2 different numbers in the NS scheme, and they look great. My suggestion, get one of them, they won't break you wallet either at 56.50 instead of 90-100.00. Plus, you can remotor it with and an A-Line can motor, which is what I did with my NS SD40-2, and it runs great...

You know, a pretty close model can be made from either the Kato or Athearn C44-9W and the cab and nose from a Rail Power Products B40-8. I'm telling you, it's a simple conversion. I've done three now and each time I get better at it. It's cheaper than you think, it's quicker than waiting for Kato or Athearn to bring it out, and it's very rewarding. The only thing that's lackluster about the completed model is the cab. But now that Atlas has their B40-8 out, maybe you could get their part.
As far as being a rabid NS modeler is concerned, I am definitely it. For me the great thing about NS isn't the classy paint scheme or the beautiful terrain, it's the opportunity to do all that kitbashing and scratchbuilding. The only "stock" NS locomotives I have are P2K SD60s and Athearn GP60s. Everything else has required major modification, but that's why I do it.
Sure it would be nice for somebody else to do the work for me, but I'm happy and more satisfied doing it myself. Not only that, since (afaik) NS was the only buyer of the spartan cab Dash 9, I wouldn't expect anyone to step up and put one out even if we asked them.
If you'd like instructions on how to do this conversion, simply email me at:
norfolksouthernhinose@yahoo.com
I'll be glad to provide you with them.

Hi all!
Just wanted to ask those of us who Model Norfolk Southern when Kato will produce a model of a
C40-9W? I mean I love the C44-9W, I have two(in CSX).But the C40-9W play's such a big role in the NS roster. And the only way to get one is to max out your credit card on a brass model!! It is especially for us Australian and foreign modellers because of the exchange rate. SO WHO IS WITH ME!!! If I can get enough people together maybe Kato might give in and make some slight alterations to it's Dash 9 model!!
Or Maybe I've got the wrong end of the bull and there is another Manufacturer that makes one! Is there?
