Yes, three Missabe Yellowstones were saved, but no B&O EM-1's, even though one was promised to the B&O Museum. The EM-1's may have been the smallest 2-8-8-4's, but by no means could they be called small engines. It's all relative.

One each in Two Harbors, MN, Proctor, Mn and one on indoor display at the Lake Superior Railroad Museum in Duluth MN. Both of the ones on outdoor display have undergone much work. The Proctor one is probably in the worst shape. It sits out unprotected in the weather. The one in Two Harbors is under a roof matching the Three Spot nearby and is fairly well protected and has been said to be in the best shape restoration wise. Of course the Duluth one is in wondelful cosmetic shape and is raised off the rails enought so that it "runs" a few times an hour during museum hours. Too bad they don't have the sound to go with it, sort of spooky seeing things turn silently. Just to let you know that three were saved from the scrap heap.

I'll tell my dirty little secret. My 2-6-0 is actually a Canadian National prototype I painted for CB&Q. It actually looks very similar to a real CB&Q 2-6-0, and I did not change details as I could have done.
So here is Canadian steam in disguise..

Thanks,Bob. I know that not everybody is crazy about heavy weathering,but the period I model is the end of steam,and most of the pictures I've seen of the Big Boys in that era show them as pretty grimy.
I mix weathering powder(Bragdon's Soot Black) with 70% isopropyl alcohol,then "paint" the engine with it.With a smaller brush I add rust or light gray for water stains. When it's dried I brush off the excess with a soft brush,holding the vacuum nozzle close. 'Gives a nice grimy look,and a little water or alcohol will clean it back up.
